Found July 26, 2013 on The Outside Corner:
The bidding for Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is over, and the winner is the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo. Gonzalez's contract with the Phillies is for six years and $50 million, with incentives potentially pushing the deal to $60 million. The 26-year old Gonzalez is reportedly major league ready according to Jose Contreras, another Cuban defector who spurred a bidding war. Philly beat out the Red Sox for Gonzalez's services. Opinions on Gonzalez are all across the board. In his scouting report on Gonzalez, Bill Badler of Baseball America believes that Gonzalez has the ceiling of a #3 starter and the floor of a long reliever, which is one hell of a spread. Gonzalez has four pitches, including a forkball, and his fastball generally sits in the mid-90s. We really won't know much about Gonzalez until he starts playing organized ball in the States. But for him to get a larger contract than Yasiel Puig, Aroldis Chapman, Yoenis Cespede...

Phillies' assistant GM says team weighing options

Philadelphia's assistant general manager says the Phillies haven't necessarily decided if they'll be buyers or sellers heading into next week's trade deadline. Scott Proefrock spoke to reporters before Saturday night's game at Detroit. The Phillies are hoping to snap a season-worst six-game losing streak, and they entered the night trailing first-place Atlanta...

Phillies receiving multiple offers for Cliff Lee

Multiple teams are making a late run at the Philadelphia Phillies with offers for pitcher Cliff Lee as Wednesday's trade deadline nears baseball sources told ESPN.com Friday. Although Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to address the extent of other teams' interest in Lee he said he's keeping an open mind on Lee and numerous other Philadelphia players...

Dead Men Walking: The 2013 Phillies

In their 4th consecutive loss on Wednesday night, I do believe the Phillies finally rolled over and died. They did not just lose 4 games, they were slaughtered in the ugliest and most painful manner possible. Every problem this team has had this season was glaring in last night’s 3-11 drubbing, courtesy of the Cardinals. It was a proverbial highlight reel of all that is wrong with...

Carlos Zambrano released by Phillies

Carlos Zambrano's attempt at a Major League comeback has come to a close - at least with the Philadelphia Phillies.  The team has released the veteran pitcher from his minor league deal.  Zambrano has not pitched in the Majors since mid-2012. Todd Zolecki of MLB.com says Zambrano was released after a solid minor league performance but a shoulder injury that caused concerns...

Achy Lee clouds Phils' deadline plans

Remember how we said the Philadelphia Phillies' games against St. Louis and Detroit this week should determine their approach to the trade deadline? Well, the Phillies are 0-4 on the road trip. They have lost six straight overall. They are nine games out in the National League East, 10 back in the second wild card. Logic says the Phillies should reboot an aging roster by trading...

Ruben Amaro Jr. prior to the Phillies’ signing of their big Cuban

(Ruben Amaro Jr., prior to the signing of Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez): What you lookin’ at? You all a bunch of ********* assholes – Keith Law and you list makers. You know why? You don’t have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your ********* fingers and say, “That’s the bad guy.” So… what that make you? Good...

Phillies' GM willing to listen on Cliff Lee

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. on Friday opened the door to trading All-Star left-hander Cliff Lee. Amaro said he owed it to the organization to entertain offers for Lee. ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick citing baseball sources reported that teams are making a late push for the 2008 American League Cy Young Award winner as the Wednesday nonwaiver deadline approaches...

Phillies are buyers after all, reports say Phillies win bidding war for Cuban Miguel Alfredo ...

With the Phillies seeing a losing streak hit six games to sink the club five games under .500 and having them fall farther back in the NL East and wild card standings, the general consensus is the Phillies should start to recognize themselves as sellers with the trade deadline coming up in just a few more days. But as we have learned, the Phillies are indeed buyers it would seem...

Next Injured: Cliff Lee

According to Todd Zolecki of Phillies.com Cliff Lee has been scratched for Saturday night's start with a stiff neck. Raul Valdes will get a start. Fun times.

Domonic Brown Heads To The Disabled List

Last night's game was a lot of fun. Looks like we will have more of that. The Phillies placed outfielder Domonic Brown on the disabled list, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer's Matt Gelb. Brown is headed to the newer seven-day disabled list for concussions. Steve Susdorf will get his first opportunity...

If Raul Valdes Is Starting, Ruben Amaro Needs To Be Departing

35 With The Potential To Be 36 Tonight in Detroit, the Phillies had to scratch Cliff Lee due to injury -- honestly, if they had any smarts at all, they'd forbid him to pitch until he's traded  -- and went with Plan Z, which is Raul Valdes. A guy who hasn't started for a year. A guy with 2 career starts. A guy who should, well, never start for a major league team. Or...

Phillies Demolished By Tigers, 10-0

As many could have predicted when the news that Cliff Lee wouldn't be starting tonight broke, the Phillies lost what was easily one of the least competitive game in MLB this season, falling 10-0 to the Detroit Tigers. Raul Valdes, starting in place of the injured Lee, was in trouble...
