Found November 03, 2012 on Phillies Nation:
Early Friday morning, Jon Heyman reported that the Phillies were early frontrunners to land B.J. Upton. The former #1 pick is a first-time free agent, and is generally considered the perfect fallback plan for teams that either miss out on, or don’t want to pay the hefty price tags of, Josh Hamilton and Michael Bourn. Upton has spent his entire career with Tampa Bay and combines solid centerfield defense with athletic baserunning ability and 20+ home run power. He is the youngest centerfield free agent, at 28 years old, and is expected to sign for $11-$13 million per season over four or five years. He is a very talented and valuable baseball player in his prime. The Rays made Upton a qualifying offer late Friday afternoon, but he isn’t likely to accept it. Given how Ruben Amaro tends to operate, if the Phillies are serious about Upton, his signing could be imminent. Amaro’s modus operandi in his brief general managership has involved identifying a target and making the deal happe...

Phillies looking to sign free agent B.J. Upton?

The baseball off-season just started, but the Phillies are already knee-deep in it, as they look to fill out their roster for 2013. And according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, they are hot on the trails of center fielder B.J. Upton, a free agent after spending his entire career with the Tampa Bay Rays. Amaro said…

Phillies Player Review: Jimmy Rollins

Having just won his fourth Gold Glove award, this player review could not come at a better time for Jimmy Rollins, a man who could use a few positives in his corner. That’s because 2012 was one of the more contentious between Rollins and the fans. Rollins once again drew criticism when he became the focal point for a city-wide debate on if and when it’s ever appropriate for a...

Jimmy Rollins and the Hall of Fame

Last year when Jimmy Rollins signed his new contract with the Phillies I commented on it by saying, ""If Jimmy is able to start another 4-5 years and finishes around: .270/.750, 1500 R, 2600 H, 525 DBL, 120 TRPL, 225 HR, 1000 RBI, 500 SB, then I think he's HoF material."Corey then countered with an entire post outlining that J-Roll will merely go down in history...

Phillies Player Review: Darin Ruf

Ruf was amazing in '12. (AP) Babe Ruf. Ruf Ryder. So many nicknames in so little time. Darin Ruf slugged his way onto the scene about midway through the 2012 season with the Reading Phillies; it wasn’t as though Ruf was some highly-touted prospect everyone knew about. Really, he was an afterthought at 26 years old; a guy who was just kind of there. That all changed. In August...

Do Phils' hires portend bigger move?

Two rival executives smell a rat in the Phillies' pursuit of free-agent center fielder B.J. Upton. Well, maybe not a rat, but a pair of embedded ex-Rays officials who know Upton quite well recently assumed prominent positions with the Phils. Bart Braun, previously a special assignment scout with the Rays, joined the Phillies last month as a special assistant to general manager...

Why I Love the Phillies – James

I grew up in Central PA and have been a Phillies fan almost my whole life. My first real memories were the ’64 collapse and Richie (call me Dick) Allen winning rookie of the year. When I was 8 years old I was watching the Yankees (hey i was only eight) on a Sunday afternoon. It was 1963 so I guess a pretty good year to be a Yankee fan, i believe they won 104 games that year and...

Top Moments #9: Chooch Makes All Star Team

For the first time in his career, Carlos Ruiz made the National League All Star team. Ruiz did not receive enough fan votes to start, although he deserved to.  The 33-year-old batted .350 with 13 home runs and a .995 OPS during the first half of the season. Ruiz headed to Kansas City for the All Star Game as a reserve, but he did receive some playing time.  He caught knuckle-baller...

AFL West Team Features Two Phillies Prospects, AFL East Triumphs in 9-4 Win

Tonight marked the seventh annual Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game in the twenty year history of the AFL. Brooke Sorenson Nix: 2012 Baseball’s Hottest Wife

Brooke Sorenson Nix - Baseball's Hottest Wife 2012 In a landslide not seen since the Nixon-McGovern election in 1972, Brooke Sorenson, wife of Philadelphia Phillies’ Laynce Nix, is the 2012 Baseball’s Hottest Wife. It was Brooke Sorenson Nix’s first year of eligibility in the contest and she certainly made the best of it.  Sorenson Nix received 25.7% of the vote in the...

MLB Opinion: Peralta Could Be Nice Option at Third for Phillies

Ideas for third base for the 2013 Philadelphia Phillies are scarce but one could be intriguing  could be a trade for Tigers Jhonny Peralta. He has not played third since 2010 but has been solid at the position in the five seasons he has played at the hot corner. He is in the last year of his contract and could be a nice stop gap until Cody Asche is ready to emerge on the big league...

Why in the world would we want to sign BJ Upton?

On the comment boards of the Yankiverse, desperate voices are calling for us to sign BJ Upton - aka Grandyman II - to a long-term deal.  Shoot these people: Find them, pull them from their homes, and put them down. I think they're mixing him up with Justin Upton, or Upton Sinclair, or Kate Upton, or maybe BJ Thomas, or maybe they just want a BJ on the team. All of the above...

Rival Executives “Smell A Rat” In Philly

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports spoke with two rival executives who say “they smell a rat” in the Phillies’ pursuit of free-agent center fielder B.J. Upton. The executives believe that to gain some leverage in going after Upton this offseason, Ruben Amaro Jr. fired their hitting coach and replaced him with Steve Henderson, the Rays’ hitting coach from 2006 to ’09, to fill...
