Texas Rangers catcher A.J. Pierzynski is out of the starting lineup for the series opener against his former team, the Chicago White Sox.
Pierzynski is dealing with soreness and bruising on his right side, though manager Ron Washington said the catcher was available to pinch hit if needed Tuesday night.
Pierzynski spent the previous eight seasons with the White Sox before signing as a free with Texas during the offseason.
Washington described Pierzynski as ''not out, he's just down.'' After an off day Monday for the team, Washington hopes an extra day or two out of the lineup will be beneficial.
Pierzynski is hitting .295, and his seven-game hitting streak is the longest for Texas this season.
Geovany Soto made his sixth start of the season at catcher for Texas.

ARLINGTON, Texas Texas catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who has battled issues with his right oblique for the last few seasons, was out of the lineup Tuesday as Texas manager Ron Washington wanted to give him extra time to rest.
"I decided to see if I give him yesterday and today so we can settle it down a little bit," Washington said. "It's nothing he can't play...
ARLINGTON, Texas Ian Kinsler's defensive play in the seventh inning Tuesday night was so good manager Ron Washington gave him a salute.
Kinsler's snare of an Alex Rios grounder up the middle and throw to first was good enough that Washington gave Kinsler a military salute from the dugout.
It's the kind of reward that perfection merits. That's what Washington thought...
ARLINGTON, Texas Texas Rangers left-hander Matt Harrison, who was already on the disabled list after having back surgery, had a setback that required additional surgery Wednesday.
Harrison had surgery for a herniated disk April 23. The surgery was deemed a success at the time but Harrison had some pain in his leg Tuesday and had an MRI Wednesday which revealed another part of the...
ARLINGTON, Texas Mitch Moreland didn't change anything when he struggled the first few weeks of the season, and he's not changing anything now that he's one of the Rangers' hottest hitters.
Moreland went 3-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 10-6 win over the White Sox.
Two of the hits went to the opposite field, a good sign for the left-handed Moreland. All three...
ARLINGTON, Texas Mike Olt and Cody Buckel, two of the top prospects in the Texas system, are dealing with separate issues that have slowed them.
Olt, who hasn't played since last Thursday for Triple A Round Rock, told the team he was having vision problems and has been seeing doctors in the Metroplex.
Buckel, the left-hander for Double A Frisco, has been shifted to the bullpen...
ARLINGTON, Texas Texas outfielder David Murphy wouldnt mind right now if he were hitting his career April average.
Murphy, who got Tuesday off in favor of Jeff Baker, is hitting just .176 this season. Hes a notoriously slow starter, with a .228 lifetime average in March and April, but it doesnt make the start any easier for him to take.
"Its tough for any player to go through...
After calling Chicago home for eight seasons, A.J. Pierzynski has settled in nicely with the Texas Rangers.
Yu Darvish is especially glad to have him behind the plate.
Pierzynski faces his former team for the first time as the Rangers open a three-game set against the visiting White Sox on Tuesday night.
A fan favorite from 2005-12, Pierzynski helped lead Chicago to a World Series...
Going to the ballpark is a pretty big deal for a kid. A souvenir to commemorate the game--like a home run ball--just makes the day perfect. So imagine the dismay on this poor kids face when his sister takes his home run ball and throws it back!
In her defense--no, there is no defense for her. It's not like the Texas Rangers are infamous for throwing back opposing home run...
With one full month of the season now completed, it is very evident there is something different going on in Arlington this season. Rangers faithful have been waiting for this day to arrive ever since the team was transplanted from Washington DC in 1972. It appears the Texas Rangers have finally allowed pitching to propel the team to success.
It wasn’t too long ago when the Rangers...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Yu Darvish overcame a shaky start for his fifth victory in April and the Texas Rangers backed him with plenty of big hits Tuesday night in a 10-6 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Darvish (5-1) struck out nine in six innings, but the game was tied when he threw the last of his 108 pitches.
Texas scored six times in the sixth to break it open. Mitch Moreland...
We showed you the incredible .GIF of Yu Darvish tossing his five pitches overlaying one another last week made by Drew Sheppard, and now courtesy of the MLB we can see the same thing from Justin Verlander. The Tigers ace has four pitches which include the fastball, curve ball, slider, and change-up. On the video you can see each of them alone, and finally all compiled together....

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Randy Wells has retired after going winless in five starts this season for the Texas Rangers' Triple-A team.

Chris Sale (3-2) remained undefeated in his career against AL West teams, settling down after a rough second inning to make it through seven. The left-hander struck out seven...
The White Sox will hit the road for a six game trip starting Tuesday in Texas. The Sox went 3-5 on an abbreviated eight game homestand with two games cancelled due to weather issues. It has been a tough go for the South Siders, who have not won a series since the first week of the season.
