Michael Pineda wasn’t going to make it a time through the rotation without us talking about his fastball or dissecting some other part of his game. He faced the Tigers yesterday and showed off a fastball that reached 94 mph. After the game he told reporters that there was more where that came from.

“I have more,” Pineda told David Waldstein of the NY Times.

“Nobody throws hard in spring training,” he said, “because it’s spring training. You work on what you need to. Now I’m focusing a little more on making a good pitch.”

“I understand,” he said. “Everybody knows last year I threw harder, and what happened to him? I say it’s nothing. I feel good and I pitch. Everybody sees me, I pitch every five days.”

To be fair, Pineda did thrower hard last spring so it’s not like there is nothing to worry about at all. He has looked good overall this spring though. The velocity wasn’t there early, but has come on slowly. He still hasn’t hit 96-98 mph, but as as he continues to get stretched out, he threw 87 pitches Sunday, it isn’t unreasonable to think that will still come.

Meanwhile, he has done a decent job keeping hitters from squaring up on him this spring and when he did struggle, he made adjustments quickly. He’s showing a great slider and a promising changeup.

New York Yankees: 3 pitching scenarios maybe 4

The New York Yankees have some pitching situations to solve. I have narrowed it down to three or four possibilities based on what I believe the 2012 Opening Day rotation should be, which in order is Sabathia, Kuroda, Pineda, Nova and Hughes. My crazy pitching diagram. First being the plethora of starting pitching. That leaves Freddy Garcia hanging out to dry, and initially I thought...

Rumor: Yankees don’t plan to release Joba Chamberlain

Many have wondered if injuring himself on a trampoline is grounds to void Joba Chamberlain‘s contract. Certainly if Aaron Boone was cut loose for getting hurt in a simple basketball game, the Yankees must have options with Joba. However, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports has reported that the Yankees have stated both publicly and privately that they are not considering releasing him...

Preview of the 2012 New York Yankees bullpen

Anyone who follows the game knows how the Yankee bullpen ends: Mariano Rivera. Never before, in the more than hundred year history of the game, has there been a player who inspires such unabashed confidence that he will get the job done as Mo. When we hear “Enter Sandman,” it’s as close to a “foregone conclusion” as you get in baseball. The guys in the Yankee bullpen...

Pettitte getting close to pitching in a game

A quick Andy Pettitte update here. Pettitte had thrown in his own words six or seven bullpens before showing up to camp, he’s done a few since showing up to camp and he has now thrown a couple of bullpens. The next step is getting him into games, but the Yankees are being very cautious with Pettitte and haven’t scheduled anything yet. “We are taking it day by day with that...

Girardi: CC gets Opening Day, Kuroda gets 2nd game

As we await the new of who exactly is going to make up the backend of the Yankees rotation, manager Joe Girardi confirmed what most of us already suspected today – that his opening day starter will be CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda will pitch the second game of the season, according to Kieran Darcy of ESPNNewYork.com. As Darcy points out, this lines Kuroda up to start the Yankees...

Putting the Pettitte Cart Before the Horse

Andrew Marchand of ESPN NY has consistently been concerned about Michael Pineda‘s velocity this spring. He, along with some other members of the media and blogosphere, have almost comically tracked each Pineda pitch. The thought of sending Pineda down to the minors seemed absurd earlier in spring, but the signing of Andy Pettitte gave the meme a more realistic chance. With the...

Yankees hopeful Joba Chamberlain can return to pitching this season

After Joba Chamberlain‘s trampoline injury to trump all trampoline injuries, there was much doubt as to whether the Yankees pitcher would be able to pitch this season or even again in his career. Chamberlain suffered an open dislocation and torn ligaments in his right ankle while playing with his son. And while examinations revealed no microfractures, doctors are still keeping...

MLB Scouting Notes: Pineda's Velocity

TAMPA, Fla. - Michael Pineda has repeatedly made statements this spring explaining that velocity is not important right now, that "nobody throws hard in spring training", and that this is the time for pitchers to work on things. He's mostly correct, but can you blame some onlookers for being a little curious as to why he has been, at times, 7-8 mph below his typical...
