Garrett Jones had three hits, including one of Pittsburgh's four home runs, Pedro Alvarez also homered and the Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 9-6 on Wednesday. James McDonald struggled through five tough innings, and Rod Barajas and Casey McGehee also went deep for the Pirates, who took two of three from the Rockies. Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez homered, and Andrew Brown, recalled Tuesday and batting cleanup, had three hits for Colorado. One of Brown's hits, an RBI single in the fourth, tied the game 6-all before the Pirates took control. Jones started the fifth with a single off reliever Matt Reynolds (3-1) and McGehee followed with his eighth homer of the season. One out later, Barajas homered to make it 9-6. The Rockies got the tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth but Gonzalez grounded out and Brown struck out to end the threat. Joel Hanrahan recorded the last three outs for his 26th save in 29 chances. Trailing 5-1 entering the third, the Pira...

Pirates Ranked 28th in Draft Spending

Here’s a phrase we haven’t used lately: the Pittsburgh Pirates finished near the bottom in draft spending this year. Baseball America has released the team by team figures, and the Pirates rank 28th, with $3,829,700 spent. It’s not like they could have spent more. They were $92,600 shy of going over their draft pool and paying a 5% tax. A big reason the number is so low is...

First Pitch: How Much Would a McCutchen Extension Cost This Year?

During the opening weeks of Spring Training, the Pittsburgh Pirates made one of the best moves, if not the best move, we’ve seen from this management group. I’m not talking about the deal that brought A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh in the first week of camp. I’m talking about the extension given to Andrew McCutchen. Can you imagine if McCutchen would have put up the season we...

It's well past time to bring Starling Marte up

The Pirates have lost two consecutive games to sub-.500 teams in which a key play was their right fielder making an awful defensive play. On Sunday, Garrett Jones air-mailed a throw that turned a routine single into a run-scoring triple. Last night, Josh Harrison turned a deep flyball that might've been a tough play but should've been an out into a rally-extending double...

McCutchen's season for Pirates becoming historic

What Andrew McCutchen has done to this point in the 2012 season almost defies adjectives. Even with his rare 0-for-4 Wednesday in the 9-6 victory at Colorado, the Pittsburgh Pirates' All-Star center fielder is batting .369 with 22 home runs and 65 RBI. From May 5 onward, he's batting .400. It's been one of the greatest offensive stretches in the 126-year history of...

Pirates Notebook: Who Says the Bucs Don’t Have Power?

Alvarez blasted No. 18 on the season in Colorado on Wednesday. Entering game action on Wednesday, Andrew McCutchen (.531 avg, 1.594 OPS) and Neil Walker (.490 avg, 1.357 OPS) were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Majors in the month of July in average and OPS. But despite those two combining to go 0-for-8 on the day, Pittsburgh was still able to pull together a huge win in Colorado...

First Pitch: MLB’s Draft Lottery System Doesn’t Achieve Its Goal

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended up with a good result in today’s Competitive Balance Lottery. They got the second pick in Compensation Round A, which right now gives them the 33rd pick in the draft. The draft worked out well, but it could have very easily gone a different way. Like a lot of changes made by baseball, the lottery made no sense. The purpose of the lottery was to award...

Colorado Rockies pitching theory may be backfiring

Is Dan O'Dowd's theory backfiring on his young pitchers?Dan O'Dowd's theory may be dismantling right in front of him.On Tuesday night at Coors Field, Christian Friedrich pitched well enough to keep his team in the game--until the 5th inning. In the fifth frame, the rookie lefty had everything set up in his favor. He was facing the bottom of the Pirates order and he...

VIDEO: Pirates announcer Greg Brown calls this double play "two more scoops of vanilla"

During tonight's Pirates-Rockies game, Michael Cuddyer of the Rockies grounds into a double play, going from Clint Barmes to Neil Walker to Casey McGehee. After the DP is turned, Pirates announcer Greg Brown shouts "two more scoops of vanilla!" after the play is turned, and then tops it off by praising "the blue collar boys!" On the surface this...

Colorado Rockies Road to 100!

Denver, CO. The Colorado Rockies road to 100 losses continued Wednesday at Coors Field with another blown lead thanks to Jeremy Guthrie. Spotted to a 5-1 lead Jeremy Guthrie again imploded leaving to boos after only lasting 2 2/3 innings in a total mystery as to what has happened to the Rockies supposed “ace” of … Continue reading »The post Colorado Rockies Road to 100! appeared...

We also had live coverage of his first, second and third starts of the year. West Virginia has off today. Game 90: Pirates 6 Rockies 2

With the Pirates in need of a strong start to help them break out of a post-All Star break mini-funk, Erik Bedard gave them 6 2/3 innings in thin air of Colorado tonight, which turned out to be plenty good for an offense that finally showed some real life after a strange set of post-ASB games. I'm not sure I'd say Bedard is "back" based on his work tonight (four...

Marlins-Pirates Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates were pleased with how they closed out their road trip. A six-game homestand provides the opportunity to continue the momentum. The Pirates begin a three-game set against the Miami Marlins on Friday night. After losing two of three at Milwaukee coming out of the All-Star break, Pittsburgh (51-40) rebounded to win the final two games of its series at Colorado...

Justin Upton and Overrating Prospects

So far the morning trade rumors today surround Justin Upton. Not much is new in the talks, although Jon Morosi of FOX Sports takes a detailed look at the Pittsburgh Pirates. Morosi says that the Pirates have remained in contact with Arizona. He notes that Neal Huntington has refused to part with Starling Marte or Jameson Taillon, although the former is counter to what we heard Sunday...
