for minor league pitcher Brooks Pounders and infielder Diego Goris.
The Bucs made yet another move tonight – this time a trade with the Kansas City Royals. They sent Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris to Kansas City in exchange for Yamaico Navarro.
Navarro, 24, will likely assume the role of utility infielder in 2012 (and could play some third if Pedro Alvarez continues to struggle). He hasn’t hit much in 112 big league plate appearances, but is...
Well the Pirates finally did it. The Pirates actually parted with a legitimate prospect. They will send former second round pick Brooks Pounders to the Royals for utility infielder Yamaico Navarro. The Pirates have acquired Yamaico Navarro from the Royals in exchange for Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris. tweets Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star first broke news that Navarro was heading to Pittsburgh (Twitter link).
The Royals battled the clock Wednesday in an effort to trade utility infielder Yamaico Navarro to enable them to make a selection Thursday in the Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings. Pittsburgh, Seattle and Houston appeared possible destinations.
When the news broke this afternoon that the Pirates were no longer in on Wilson Betemit and that they'd made their roster moves to accomodate Erik Bedard and Nate McLouth without releasing Ross Ohlendorf, my gut feeling was that it was a sign that there was another move in the offing. It turns out that was a good instinct: the Pirates traded Brooks Pounders and Diego Goris tonight...

The Royals traded infielder Yamaico Navarro to Pittsburgh for two minor-league players late Wednesday in a clock-beating move that cleared a roster space prior to Thursday morning's Rule 5 Draft at the Winter Meetings.
As it turns out, the Pirates released Ross Ohlendorf last night to create a space on the roster to make a Rule 5 pick today, not to make room for Yamaico Navarro. The roster spot for Navarro will apparently be cleared sometime this afternoon. The draft is in about five minutes. I'm busy this morning, but I'll try to get this post updated as quickly as I can. Until then,...
The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right handed pitcher Jeremy Hefner for assignment in order to make room for Yamaico Navarro on the 40-man roster. Hefner was originally claimed by the Pirates on November 18th, after being designated for assignment by the Padres. The Pirates will have ten days to trade, waive, or release Hefner. If he clears waivers, the team can assign him to AAA.
In one of the more personally amusing incidences of online post-scheduling this winter, I wrote a preview of the Pirates' off-season for The Hardball Times that went live on Wednesday morning, hours before the club finalized a contract with Nate McLouth, signed Erik Bedard, and traded for Yamaico Navarro. These sorts of things are unavoidable, of course, but it's quite amusing...
