Found July 12, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired 1B/OF Russ Canzler from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor league pitcher Tim Alderson. Canzler is on the 40-man roster, and to make room the Pirates placed James McDonald on the 60-day DL. The Pirates have sent Canzler to Triple-A. More to come.

P3 Episode 13: What Are the Needs For the Pirates as the Deadline Nears?

Episode 13 of The Pirates Prospects Podcast can be downloaded or streamed below. This episode includes analysis from Tom Bragg (@TomBraggSports), James Santelli (@JamesSantelli) and myself (@timwilliamsP2) on the Pirates. Highlights of the show include: **With Jose Tabata returning with a hot bat, we ask whether the Pirates need to trade for a right fielder. One factor that could...

Who Is Still Unsigned From the 2013 Draft Class?

The MLB draft signing deadline is tomorrow at 5 PM EST. To see who the Pirates have already signed, check out the Draft Pick Signing Tracker. In previous years the draft pick signing deadline always had some sort of drama surrounding it. The question marks throughout the years: 2008: Will Pedro Alvarez sign? 2009: Will the Pirates sign any more prep pitchers? 2010: Will Jameson Taillon...

First Pitch: The Actual Value of Platoons

Last night I wrote about how the problem with the Pirates offense this year has been that three positions in the lineup struggle against left-handed pitching. Pedro Alvarez, Neil Walker, and the right-field duo of Travis Snider and Jose Tabata have all struggled against lefties this year. Platoons are very underrated. Or should I say the left-handed side of the platoon is underrated...

DSL Prospect Watch: Pirates Drop Mets, De La Cruz Reaches Base Four Times Again

Throughout the year, we will provide the recaps of both teams, as well as highlight one player each day.  PIRATES1  Box Score Result: Marlins 4, Pirates 2 Starting Pitcher: Miguel Ferreras, RHP (4.50) – 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Tito Polo, CF...

Unassuming Locke among unlikeliest All-Stars

Jeff Locke understands the entire premise is borderline preposterous. Four months ago, the 25-year-old left-hander was simply hoping to escape spring training with a spot at the back end of the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting rotation. Now he's fielding questions about whether he'd feel comfortable appearing in the All-Star game on one day's rest. No, seriously. ...

Minor League Schedule: Glasnow Takes Show On The Road

Coming off his longest career outing, Tyler Glasnow pitches in Asheville today, trying to improve on his 3-1, 2.70 road record in nine starts. The GCL Pirates and both Dominican League affiliates are off today. For a look at the possible starters over the next few weeks, please check out our Probable Pitchers Chart. Check out the Recent Transactions section to the bottom of this...

Jordy Mercer Breaks Slide with Walkoff Single in 3-2 Win Over Mets

Pedro Alvarez was characteristically nonplussed about his 1st-inning home run after his Derby selection. Jordy Mercer was struggling at the plate through July when he came up in the 11th inning with two runners on. The Pirates’ now-second baseman stepped in 4-for-31 over the month with no extra-base hits. No time like walkoff time to stop a skid in front of 39,036 fans, PNC Park’s...

First Pitch: The New Draft System is Growing on Me

This is the second year that the MLB draft has operated under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Pirates didn’t really experience the new system last year, mostly because Mark Appel fell to them and didn’t sign. This year was more of a “normal” draft under the new system, if you can say anything is normal after just two years. Because it was a more common draft...

Russell Martin Is Silky Smooth

I landed the first silk of my collection, and it appropriately is a Russ Martin silk.Numbered 05/50, it ran me just $3.50 delivered and - as is the norm for Russell's cards - comes complete with a great photo of the former Blue Crew backstop.

Pirates 3, Mets 2

All of a sudden people are feeling a lot better about the Pirates again after an exciting walkoff win over the Mets Friday night at sold out PNC Park. The Bucs have won two in a row and certainly appear to have put the four game losing streak in the rear view mirror. Leading up to the game, all the talk was about Pedro Alvarez, David Wright, and the Home Run Derby “drama.” Pedro...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets – Game 91

Come on guys.  Let’s win a series before the break.  Stop losing ground.  Stop the slide.  Give everyone some hope going into the All Star Break.  The mood is too gloomy for my liking.  Just a little dash of positivity. Maybe that little bit will help clear up the case of PTSD Pirates fans are…

Game Preview: Mets @ Pirates

After a very successful trip to San Francisco (boasting a three game sweep) the Mets travel to Pittsburgh for their last series before a much needed All-Star break. The Mets have done well as of late but they are going to meet a Pittsburgh squad that has been doing well all season. One controversy between these two clubs became a mute point yesterday as Wright selected Alvarez to...

Pittsburgh Heel Turn

Well I hope Pirates fans feel better now that they've gotten their anger out of their system towards David Wright. I hope their announcers are also happy that they fanned the flames of their already agitated fan base to stir up some sort of rah rah ballpark interest. Good for them. Even though they have four all-stars and 54 wins going into Friday's game, and therefore a...
