Final: Blue Jays 8, Pirates 6 WP: Deck McGuire (1-0, 0.00 ERA) LP: Jeff Locke (0-1, 13.50 ERA) SV: Robert Coello (1, 9.00 ERA) This game is a perfect example why winning or losing Spring Training games do not matter. The Bucs lost this one, but there are a lot of really good things to take out of it. Pedro Alvarez, after starting off the spring 0 for 5, went 2 for 3 with an opposite field home run on a 3-2 count off Kyle Drabek. He also singled and struck out on 3 pitches. But overall, some good signs. Garrett Jones hit a monster home run to right field and Josh Harrison went 2 for 2 with 2 doubles, giving him 3 two-baggers this spring. Starling Marte is a beast. After playing in the Pirates’ intrasquad scrimmage this morning, he was plugged into the lineup in the 6th inning of this game and went 2 for 2 with a home run on the first pitch he saw. He is now 8 for 11 (.727) this spring and has hit safely in 7 straight at bats. Jeff Karstens started and pitched 3 scoreless innings and ...

Marte homers again in extra innings loss

Final: Phillies 5, Pirates 4 (10 innings) WP: Michael Schwimmer LP: Michael Dubee Didn’t get to watch this one, but it is available on MLB.tv in the archives if any subscribers are interested in checking it out. Starling Marte homered in his first AB for his 2nd long ball of the spring. It also extended his hit streak to 8 straight AB. He did, however actually record an out later...

No need to rush on a Neil Walker extension

With the signing of Andrew McCutchen now finalized, many fans are now asking, “Who’s next?” Based on the roster, the easy answer to that question is Neil Walker. Pat Lackey [link] and David Todd [link] and both have pretty opposite view points and both make pretty good points. Is Neil Walker next in line for an extension? First off, let’s talk about what we know. Neil Walker...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Rejoice! McCutchen Through 2017!

Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug If there was absolutely one move the Pittsburgh Pirates’ ownership had to make to give their fans some hope this seemingly endless rebuilding isn’t all for naught, this was it. After an offseason of stalling and blackballing, the Pirates surprised everyone, christening Spring Training by locking up All-Star CF Andrew McCutchen with a 6-year, $51...

NL Central preview: Pittsburgh Pirates

In today’s NL Central preview we feature the swashbuckling Buccos from Pennsylvania – the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 2011 campaign brought forth a renewed sense of hope for the Pirates. First year skipper Clint Hurdle guided the club to the All-Star Break with a winning record for the first since 1992. A week later the team took over sole possession of first place – a feat...

Starling Marte is on fire (and the long term implications)

The biggest buzz out of Bradenton through the first week of spring training games is that Starling Marte, who's generally been ranked somewhere in the 50-100 portion of people's Top 100 prospects lists, is absolutely on fire. He's played in five games, he's 8-for-11 and he's got a double and a homer, he stole a base, and he hasn't struck out yet (update as...

Phillies 5, Pirates 4

The Bucs fell to the Phillies in the 10th inning today, 5-4. At the plate: Starling Marte homered again, giving him 8 hits in as many at bats. The impressive streak ended next time up when he flew out to right. Rod Barajas had two hits, including a double. On the mound: James McDonald allowed a run on two hits in three innings of work. Justin Wilson walked three and couldn...

Should Anyone Sign Derrek Lee?

Derrek Lee hasn’t retired just yet. According to Ken Rosenthal, Lee is looking to play during the upcoming season, but he’s looking for the “right opportunity.” Lee struggled early on last season, but managed to turn his season around upon being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates — albeit, in a very small sample. Still, Lee’s resurgence with Pittsburgh hasn’t led to a...

Pirates beat Yanks 7-3

Final: Pirates 7, Yankees 3 WP: Chris Resop (1-0, 4.50 ERA) LP: Phil Hughes (0-1, 6.75 ERA) This game wasn’t on tv and I wasn’t able to listen to it, but here are some highlights. Kevin Correia started and didn’t give up a hit over 2 scoreless frames. He did walk 2 batters. Ryota Igarashi, Juan Cruz, Chris Leroux, and Tony Watson all pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Andrew...

Spring Training: The Phils even their grapefruit league record with a walk-off home run in extra-innings, as they defeat the Pirates, 4-3.

A lead-off, walk-off home run in the bottom of tenth leads the Phils to a 4-3 victory over the Pirates, as they even their grapefruit league record to 3-3. The Phils took the lead in the second as, with one man on, and with nobody out, Ty Wigginton hits an RBI double, knocking in Hunter Pence, who had just singled, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Phils increased their lead in the...
