The Trib’s Rob Biertempfel wrote a couple of paragraphs about how Clint Hurdle was stroking his bullpen’s ego after a rough week. It’s just another reason Hurdle is the right man for the job…could you really see Jim Tracy or John Russel doing that – I don’t think so. But Bier’s article might give some people the wrong idea, that the pen is really struggling and they need help.
They don’t…at all.
The releivers have taken their turns getting blasted over the last two weeks but it’s nothing like what the starters are going through. No one in the pen has completely gone off the deep end like J-Mac and no one has been as inconsistent as Bedard. It’s been on a bit of a skid as a whole, but the Buccos’ pen is still the second best in baseball and has more saves than any other team.
Joel Hanrahan has put runners on base all year but he’s still the NL saves leader because he locks it down in Hammer Time no matter how many runners are in scoring position. Jason Grilli is 35 and on p
