The Pirates have their catcher. They also have their setup man. Still, there's plenty left on general manager Neal Huntington's to-do list before the team reports for spring training in two months.
Pittsburgh signed former New York Yankee catcher Russell Martin to take over behind the plate and brought back reliever Jason Grilli. The Pirates remain in the market for another starting pitcher and could be looking for outfield help to surround All-Star centerfielder Andrew McCutchen.
Huntington said Friday he's ''happy'' with the work the team has done in the offseason and expects to look for upgrades as the Pirates try to improve on their most successful season in 20 years. Pittsburgh went 79-83 but stumbled down the stretch.

In the Australian Baseball League today, Adelaide split a doubleheader, with both games going extra innings. In game one, the Bite pulled out a 2-1 victory in 11 innings. Three Pirates players were in the starting lineup, Stefan Welch at third base, Justin Howard as the DH and Dylan Child behind the plate. Welch had a rough game, going 0-for-5, with two strikeouts. Child went 0-for...
It’s safe to say that Jason Grilli can be called a journeyman. Over the course of 10 big-league seasons, the 36-year-old has played for six major league teams and countless minor league stops, finding intermittent success along the way.
However, in 2012 Grilli probably had the best season of his career, his second with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Over the course of 58 2/3 innings,...
The Tigers are in need of a late-inning reliever or closer and have a young, solid starting pitcher that they are likely to trade. The Pirates need a solid starting pitcher and have a late-inning reliever or closer that they are likely to trade.
Because of those two things, many have wondered that a deal involving the Pirates’ Joel Hanrahan and Tigers’ Rick Porcello makes sense...
The Pittsburgh Pirates answered one question by re-signing setup reliever Jason Grilli as a free agent. However, that move creates another question. Will Joel Hanrahan be the Pirates' closer on Opening Day? Now that the Pirates signed Grilli to a two-year, $6.75 million contract, they have more flexibility to pursue a trade of Hanrahan. Grilli, 37, has just five saves in...
Pirates GM Neal Huntington was upbeat about the team's prospects in 2013 in this interview with PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko at PirateFest.
In Australian Baseball League action from today, three Pirates players were in the starting lineup for Adelaide, as they rolled to a 6-1 victory. Stefan Welch collected the only hit of the group, going 1-for-4, with a walk. Justin Howard went 0-for-3, also drawing a walk. Dylan Child was behind the plate again, going 0-for-2, with a sacrifice bunt. He threw out one of the three attempted...
For a long time Matt Hague was everyone’s favorite underdog. He was so beloved he even had his own twitter campaign, #FreeMattHague. There was never really a huge reason for it. He’s been alright in his Minor League career, but certainly nothing obscenely special. Hague was drafted out of college and basically spent a whole [...]
The Detroit Tigers signed Anibal Sanchez today, which has led to a lot of speculation that Rick Porcello could become available in a trade. Jim Bowden reports that the Pirates are one of the teams interested in Porcello.

In Australia today, Zac Fuesser threw six innings in his team’s 4-2 loss. Fuesser allowed all four runs, three were earned, while giving up seven hits, two walks and he struck out seven batters. He threw 102 pitches on the night, 67 were for strikes. He is scheduled to appear in Sunday’s ABL All-Star game. Fuesser has a 2-2, 4.02 record, with a 1.37 WHIP, 1.76 GO/AO ratio and...
For some reason the discussion of military training and the Pittsburgh Pirates is still going on. Back in September, Bob Nutting addressed the media and commented on the topic, with the original comments seen here. A big focus was placed on this quotes:
“We should not be, will not be, are not a military organization.”
That’s led to a lot of people saying that Nutting ordered...
