The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that Todd Tomczyk (pronounced “TOM-zick”) has been hired as the team’s Head Athletic Trainer.  We heard earlier in the week that the Pirates had fired head athletic trainer Brad Henderson.

Tomczyk, 35, spent the last five seasons as an assistant athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Prior to joining the Dodgers, he spent eight years in the Cleveland organization working as the athletic trainer for Triple-A Buffalo (2005-06), Double-A Akron (2003-04), Class-A Columbus (2000-01) and Class-A Burlington (1999). Tomczyk also served as Cleveland’s minor league rehabilitation coordinator for two seasons (2001-02).

Tomczyk is a Bethel Park native and a 1994 graduate of Seton-La Salle High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sports medicine from Duquesne University and his master’s degree in exercise science from California University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Todd is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
