The Pittsburgh Pirates continued to search for ways to bolster their roster, with an emphasis on offense, but the big move had yet to drop.

They've expressed interest in at least two outfielders, the Diamondbacks' Justin Upton and the Padres' Carlos Quentin, with Upton apparently the preferred choice. The team also is hoping to add a pitcher, preferably one for starting depth. Unlike the bat, this wouldn't have to be an impact player.

"There's no question we're looking," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.

The Pirates would prefer not to give up any of their top three prospects -- RHP Gerrit Cole, RHP Jameson Taillon, OF Starling Marte -- with Cole being considered extremely unlikely to move.

Bob Nutting, the Pirates' owner, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review over the weekend that he'd be opposed to any such trade if only a rental comes back.

"One thing we'll never do, that I'll never allow, is giving up our best young players for a short-term gain or a rental. We'd be crazy to do that," Nutting told the paper. "There also are trades where you can get years of control with a player, so I'd say (GM) Neal (Huntington) has some very interesting decisions to make. But Marte, Cole, Taillon, (Luis) Heredia, they're what gets us over the top."

The Pirates remained 10 games over .500 at 49-39 after falling 4-1 Sunday in Milwaukee. The Brewers took two of three.
