Found April 12, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Bryan Morris has been recalled. The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled Bryan Morris and designated Chris Leroux for assignment, per a team press release. Morris will be active for tonight’s game. The Pirates have a somewhat depleted bullpen right now. Justin Wilson and Jeanmar Gomez both went multiple innings earlier in the week in place of Wandy Rodriguez. Jason Grilli threw several days in a row this week. Morris should add a fresh arm to the mix. In his brief time in Triple-A, Morris had thrown three shutout innings, with two strikeouts. He throws a mid-90s fastball and an upper 80s cutter that’s a good strikeout pitch. Morris had very little to learn in Triple-A, and was pretty much sent down because he had options remaining. Leroux was out of options, and you can’t fault the Pirates for giving him a shot. He’s had strong secondary ratios since joining the club, with a high strikeout rate and a low walk rate. Last year he struggled returning from a pectoral strain, which lowered his velocity and forced him to rely more on his slider. The velocity bounced back some this year (92.1 MPH vs 91.2 MPH last year), but wasn’t to the point it was before the injury (93.6 MPH). He was also throwing 50% sliders in his limited innings, and had six walks in four innings. If Leroux clears waivers, the Pirates can try to outright him to Triple-A. However, since this would be the second time he’s been outrighted, he could refuse and declare free agency. He obviously wasn’t doing well in the early part of this season, but I still like the potential of Leroux. Before the injury he looked like a good sleeper reliever. If the Pirates can retain him, and if he can get back to where he was in 2011, he could emerge as a good option for the bullpen later in the year. As for Morris, you’d like to see him up for good, getting work in the middle innings and eventually moving to the late inning roles where his stuff definitely plays. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s only up for a short time. The Pirates may need a spot starter for Wandy Rodriguez. If they go with a Wilson/Gomez combo again, they will deplete their bullpen again this week. That leaves a spot starter from Triple-A as an alternative, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Morris goes back down when a spot starter is needed.

The Tricky Rules Surrounding the Morris and Leroux Transactions

Chris Leroux can refuse an outright assignment and become a free agent. Earlier today the Pirates called up Bryan Morris and designated Chris Leroux for assignment. It seems like a simple process for each player. Usually when a player is DFAd, he is placed on waivers and outrighted to Triple-A. With Morris, he had been optioned to start the year, and was just recalled. But there...

Pirates recall RHP Morris, designate RHP Leroux

Right-handed reliever Bryan Morris was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pittsburgh Pirates before Friday night's game with the Cincinnati Reds and fellow righty Chris Leroux was designated for assignment. Leroux had a 6.75 ERA in two relief appearances this season, allowing three runs and four hits in three innings with six walks and three strikeouts. He can opt for...

Phil Irwin to start tomorrow

According to Kristy Robinson and Rob Biertempfel, Phil Irwin will get the call to the majors to make his major league debut tomorrow afternoon against the Reds. He will replace Wandy Rodriguez, who will miss the start due to his strained left hamstring. Irwin posted very strong numbers in the minors last season (mostly in Altoona). The big righty was promoted to Indy at the end of...

The Marauders Defense Has Been Pretty Offensive So Far

Alen Hanson has six errors so far this season. The Bradenton Marauders have a lot of offensive talent. They feature Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco, the two biggest breakout players from last season. They’ve got Jose Osuna and Willy Garcia, guys who have just as much talent as Hanson and Polanco, but didn’t put up the ridiculous numbers. Dan Gamache was a sixth round pick who...

Sadler, Cunningham lead Curve to victory in home opener

The Altoona Curve defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-4 in their first home game of the year. Starting pitcher Casey Sadler was solid in the victory, going six innings and surrendering three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two. Offensively, the Curve were led by second baseman Jarek Cunningham who went 3-for 4, including a two-run homer in the third inning. Gift Ngoepe...

Bullpen Strong Again in Pirates 3-1 Win Against Reds

The Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen one again showed why it has been one of the strongest units in Major League Baseball this season on Saturday. Mark Melancon has not allowed a hit in PNC Park yet this season. The only fireworks came after the game (and during the ninth inning from the inaugural game at Highmark Stadium — home of the Pittsburgh RiverHounds soccer team), as the bullpen...

Pittsburgh Pirates Start to the Season

Starling Marte has been the Pirates best offensive threat through the seasons first nine games. The Pittsburgh Pirates have gotten off to a 3-6 start in their first nine games of the season but their record does not indicate how well they COULD be if everything was clicking to this point. Let’s begin with the offense: The Pirates have had a very poor start to the season with...

Minor League Schedule: 4/13/13

Three pitchers are going tonight, who didn’t give up an earned run in their season debut, Kris Johnson, Stolmy Pimentel and Tyler Glasnow. Indianapolis has a doubleheader today. The second game is a make-up of the Thursday night rain out. No starter has been announced for the second game as of yet. West Virginia completed their Thursday night game prior to yesterday’s regularly...

Pirates 6, Reds 5

Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and drove in three runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Friday night. McCutchen's leadoff shot to left field off J.J. Hoover (0-3), his second homer of the season, snapped a 5-all tie. Cincinnati had just tied the score in the top of the seventh on Brandon Phillips' second home...

Pirates the unlikely victors vs. Reds

Jeff Locke against Johnny Cueto?  Good luck.  Even I wasn’t feeling too optimistic about this game.  However, Jeff Locke’s Pirates proved me wrong, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.  Cueto left after just 4.1 innings with an injured arm.  I won’t be happy about the injury, but the timing worked out well for…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 9

One must assume at this point in time Jonathan Sanchez and Chris Leroux will be 1. and 1a. when some of these pitchers start to get healthy. It was pretty infuriating to me that Sanchez broke camp with the team in the first place.  If he stays much longer I just might have to take…

Pirates claim sweet victory from Reds

AJ Burnett gave a strong effort, and a few more bats came to life in tonight’s 6-5 win over the Reds.  Brandon Phillips homered twice but struck out to end the game for a sweet Buccos victory. Phillips’ first homerun came in the 2nd inning, as he led off with a homerun to tie the…
