Scouts who have watched Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole pitch tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that "he could go now" directly into the team's starting rotation. While Pittsburgh is likely to give veteran arms -- including Francisco Liriano, Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens -- shots at the rotation first, it appears that Cole could soon push for a promotion. When asked about the team's pitching prospects in general -- also including Jameson Taillon -- general manager Neal Huntington told Rosenthal that he will not rush young arms to the majors. “They’ll have to work their way into our plans,” Huntington says. “We built this club to not be dependent upon one or both having to get here. We built this club so they can get here when they’re ready.” Still, the Pirates are currently second in the National League Central, and if the team believes Cole is the pitcher that gives them the best chance to win they could call him up at some point this season. The 22-year-old entered the year as a top-10 prospect according to Baseball American and MLB.com. He's done nothing to damage this rating, as he's posted an ERA of 2.45 over six starts of the Pirates' Triple-A affiilate. He's handed out a higher amount of free passes than usual, but scouts say he's sporting a nasty sinker which has helped hold batters to 21 hits over 29 1/3 innings.
