The Pirates optioned right-hander Evan Meek to Triple-A Indianapolis after Monday night's game with instructions to sharpen the location on his fastball.
Manager Clint Hurdle said he wasn't ready to announce a corresponding move.
Meek allowed three inherited runs to score and was charged with one earned run in 1 2-3 innings against the Braves on Friday night.
He had a 5.59 ERA in nine games, allowing 12 hits and six runs in 9 2-3 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander was 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA in 24 games in 2011 and 5-4 with a 2.14 ERA in 2010.

Evan Meek Isn't Evan Meek Anymore
Evan Meek has been sent down to AAA. I'm not writing this post to tell you that. Ever since I saw Meek pitch in spring training, I've been worried. He had shoulder surgery last summer and hasn't been the same guy since. The fastball velocity is way down and it's clear that he isn't the kind of pitcher that can be effective without the big velocity (at least not...
Justin Wilson leads charge in combined no-hitter
Box
The AAA-Indianapolis Indians sent three pitchers out today to no-hit the Durham Bulls, the AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Justin Wilson, Jose Diaz, and Doug Slaten combined on the no-hitter.
Justin Wilson, the Pirates’ 5th round pick in 2008, pitched 7 1/3 hitless innings allowing only two walks. The south paw also struck out nine batters. Wilson threw 105 pitches, 72...
Today in 'Crazy Pedro Alvarez Stats'
How much power do you need to offset a bad on-base percentage and still be a good hitter in 2012? You don't need to look any further than Pedro Alvarez's FanGraphs page to find out! Pedro's .349 ISO is higher than the batting averages of all but five qualified players in the National League. Jose Bautista lead all of baseball with a .306 ISO last year and after Curtis...
Pirates Recall Jared Hughes
The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled RHP Jared Hughes to take Evan Meek‘s spot on the roster. Meek was optioned to AAA after last night’s game against the Braves. This is a bit of a head-scrather to me. Hughes had a pretty good ERA when he went down (1.86), but otherwise he did nothing to impress [...]
Pirates strand themselves in Hotlanta
The Pirates offense actually scored some runs on Saturday so we were thinking maybe once they got there bats going against Atlanta’s miserable pitching, they might be able to make it back-to-back wins against the Braves, especially with Kevin Correia on the mound to take on Tim Hudson, who was starting his first game of the year coming off of herniated disc surgery.
The Buccos scored...

Pirates 9, Braves 3
Pedro Alvarez and Yamaico Navarro each hit two-run homers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed a long-awaited offensive breakthrough as they beat the Atlanta Braves 9-3 on Monday night.
The Pirates, last in the major leagues with 58 runs in 22 games, almost doubled their previous season high of five runs. Neil Walker had three hits and drove in a run.

Recap 4/29 | Braves 4 Pirates 3
The Pirates lost 4-3 today. Kevin Correia didn't have all that great of an outing for the Pirates as he threw right around 100 pitches. He pitched 4.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits, as one of the walks forced in a run in the fifth inning. Brad Lincoln pitched two innings and allowed a solo homerun to Martin Prado. Tony Watson and Evan Meek each put together scoreless...

Pedro plays against a lefty
The Pirates look for a split against the Braves tonight in the fourth-game of the weirdly-scheduled four-game set with James McDonald and Mike Minor on the mound. Minor is a, awfully tough lefty, but he doesn't have much of a platoon split and since Pedro Alvarez has been the Pirates' best hitter for the last week or so, Clint Hurdle will leave him in the lineup to face Minor...
Maybe someday we'll know the truth behind what happened in the Miguel Sano story, but that day ...
Baseball Prospectus posted its review of Pelotero yesterday, which is well worth checking out if you're a Pirate fan. The documentary delves pretty deeply into the Miguel Sano saga, depicting Rene Gayo as the manipulative villain of the falling out between Sano and the Pirates. As Ken Funck notes, this is very clearly only one side of the story and despite there being quite...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 24
That was not enjoyable. The good news is that the Pirates still kept the bats going. The bad news is the pitching fell apart. Charlie Morton. Not good. Jared Hughes. Not good. Tony Watson. Not good. Brad Lincoln. Good. You aren’t going to win too many games in which you give up nine runs. You [...]
