Found January 03, 2012 on Where Is Andy Van Slyke:
Jen Langosch is reporting tonight that the Pirates have signed lefty Jo-Jo Reyes to a minor league deal and from Reyes' own tweet, it's probably safe to assume that he'll be a non-roster invite to spring training. Reyes spent 2011 with the Blue Jays and Orioles after being traded from the Braves to the Royals in 2010. He was drafted by the Braves in the second round in 2003. If Reyes' name sounds familiar to you (and not because Jo-Jo is a funny name), it's probably because he managed to lose a whole bunch of consecutive starts between 2008 and 2011 with the Braves and Blue Jays. It's true that Reyes' big league numbers are pretty ugly: he's got a 6.05 ERA, he's got a 1.5 HR/9 rate, and his K/BB ratio is 1.47 (5.8:3.9, for the individual rates). It's not hard to see why the Pirates would be interested in Reyes, though. His minor league numbers are very good, from strikeouts to walks to homers, even though he's 27 now and the minor league n...

The Baltimore Inferiority Complex

If you have grown up in Baltimore you know what I am talking about - if you don't know what I am speaking of allow me to explain. Virtually everyone that has grown up in the greater Baltimore area suffers from a unique condition called the "Baltimore Inferiority Complex" (BIC). The BIC results in your average Baltimorean taking a salty attitude towards virtually...

Minor League Depth — Catcher

This is the first of a series covering the Pirates’ minor league depth position by position. The idea is to take a look at the players the system has available at a position, level by level. No organization has prospects at every position and every level. It’s interesting to see just how well the Pirates are covered at each spot by players who at least have some chance to turn...

Winter League Playoffs 1/2 — 3 Hits For Ciriaco

The Mexican Pacific League playoffs began yesterday.  This league uses a playoff format like we’re used to seeing in the US leagues.  The top 6 teams are in the playoffs, with #1 Culiacan playing the #6 Navojoa, #2 Mexicali vs. #5 Mochis, and #3 Obregon vs. #4 Hermosillo  in the best-of-7 first round.  Los Venados de Mazatlan, with Pirates’ Rogelio Noris, finished...

Pirates Sign Jo-Jo Reyes

This is old news that is just becoming official, but the Pirates have signed Jo-Jo Reyes to a minor league deal. Reyes is not a good baseball player, and this move will almost surely prove irrelevant, but I'll probably write more about this later.

Orioles Rumors: Adam Jones, Tommy Hanson, Fielder

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun has produced a good amount of Orioles information today; let's discuss the highlights. The Orioles are fairly confident they will add another outfielder, though that wouldn't necessarily portend an Adam Jones trade.  The Orioles were not overly intrigued by the Braves' offer of Jair Jurrjens, Martin Prado, and a minor league...

Texas trades for Snyder, re-signs Nelson

The Rangers acquired infielder Brandon Snyder from the Orioles for cash considerations on Tuesday. Texas also re-signed left-handed-hitting first baseman Brad Nelson to a Minor League contract. He will be assigned to Minor League camp.

Red Sox Sign Pedro Ciriaco

The Red Sox have reportedly reached an agreement with former Pirates infielder Pedro Ciriaco.

Five to One

Welcome to 2012, Pirate fans! Hopefully this year will be better than the last. I spent the last few days of 2011 and the first couple days of 2012 turning over post ideas and discussion points in my head, so the long holiday break here at WHYGAVS is over. Let's start with what's the Pirates' most pressing current need for what's left of the off-season: the starting...

Orioles acquire OF Miller from A's (AP)

The Baltimore Orioles have obtained outfielder Jai Miller from the Oakland Athletics, who parted with the part-time player for cash considerations. Miller was designated for assignment by Oakland on Dec. 23 after the A's received four players for pitcher Gio Gonzalez. The 26-year-old Miller went 3 for 12 with a homer and two RBIs for Oakland last season after being called up in September.
