TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates
This morning has been filled with Pirates talk. First, Ken Laird and Guy Junker talked to Pirates manager Clint Hurdle on TribLIVE Radio. Here are some quotes from Hurdle from the show:
"Alvarez will get the first shot at third base."
This isn't huge news, but it's good to hear that starting at AAA isn't an option for Pedro, even though he will have another option on his contract.
"Not many people can really embrace what Pedro went through. We all have opinions, we all think we know what's best for someone else. He wants to make everyone happy, which is also part of the problem. You can't make everyone happy."
"Presley will get the first shot in left field."
This is interesting in two ways. First of all, Hurdle didn't exactly exude confident in Presley by saying he'll get the "first shot". There's no reason that anyone should be incredibly confident with him since he really hasn't put up sustained numbers yet because of the small sample size. The second reason it's interesting is because now we know that Jose Tabata is indeed going to shift to right field. That makes sense, as Presley can cover more ground than Tabata and will play the spacious left side of PNC better than Jose. That said, the Pirates outfield is going to be one of the fastest in the bigs, not many balls are going to find that grass.
"[Barmes] will get a bloody nose for you."
This was a testament to the kind of ball that Clint Barmes plays. Hurdle really likes his work ethic and blue-collar style. He said much of the same about Rod Barajas.
Hurdle said he thinks the Pirates will have a "very good bullpen" and that the bench will be stronger than last year. It's not saying much for the bench to be better than last year, because it was really rough for most of the year. I certainly agree with Hurdle's confidence in the bullpen, they have some very solid arms and really good depth.
If you don't listen to TribLIVE Radio, you really need to start. It's straight sports talk, no cutesy talk. My personal opinion is that sports talk radio shows these days take too many calls from the public. What Joe Schmo says about the Pirates means nothing, we want to hear the experts, and that's what TribLIVE brings to you. Also, I'm an occasional guest on the station during the offseason and I'll be on there on a weekly basis come summer time.
Besides Hurdle on TribLIVE, Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette had some quotes from Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage. Here are some highlights.
Searage told Brink that Charlie Morton was "blowing up" rehabilitation schedule, but he needs to be careful with arm strength and long toss. That's certainly good news. It's becoming more and more possible that Morton could be ready for the beginning of the season and might not even miss a start. If the Pirates put him in the #5 spot they'll have an extra week, and it sounds like Morton could very well be ready to start by April 11th or so.
Erik Bedard told Searage that this offseason was the "first time [in a long time] that he didn't have to do a throwing program that was detailed for rehab". That's more good news, since Bedard has had huge problems with injuries the last few years. A different offseason that isn't focused on recovering from an injury could be just what he needs to get his 2012 innings count back up.
Lastly, Searage said that last year's staff didn't have sore arms, but tired legs that caused their arms to work harder and resulted in the breakdown we saw in the mid to late second half of the season. That's also good news, I suppose, because you never want to mess around with sore arms, tired legs are a much better thing to have to deal with.
We're getting closer and closer to spring training, so baseball talk like this should become more commonplace as the days pass. Keep coming back to The "Mc" Effect, I'll have it all covered for you.

Taking a Look at the Pirates’ Crowded Bullpen
Yesterday the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they had signed right handed reliever Juan Cruz to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. Cruz was considered one of the better set-up men in the game just a few years ago, and is coming off a pretty good year pitching out of Tampa Bay’s bullpen, one year removed from a shoulder injury.
Following the move, I raised...
Bar news: Tony Sanchez and Budweiser
Both these news bits are a day or so old, but since things continue to be slow I figured I’d put them up here anyway in case you missed them.
Tony Sanchez broke his jaw in a bar fight earlier this offseason. He is apparently fully healthy now, but suffered an enormous setback in his development over the past two years mainly because of a broken jaw in 2010. Another round can...
Baseball America Releases 2012 Top 100 Draft Prospects
Baseball America has released their pre-season top 100 draft prospects today, complete with scouting reports for each player. The Pirates will have four to five picks in the top 100, depending on whether Derrek Lee signs with another team or opts for retirement.
The Pirates pick eighth overall in the first round. Baseball America’s eighth ranked player is Brian Johnson, a left...
Pirates sign reliever Brian Tallet
Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus tweeted today that the Pirates signed left-handed reliever Brian Tallet. Tallet’s deal is a minor league contract and does not yet include an invite to spring training (Major League camp).
After hearing that an invite to camp doesn’t go along with this signing, I think it is safe to say that Tallet will be starting off the year in AAA...
The BP First Take: Friday, February 3 by Daniel Rathman
As spring training approaches, almost every player looking for a bounce-back season claims to be in the best shape of his life. Pirates infielder Casey McGehee is no exception; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Bill Brink tweeted on Thursday that the first-year Bucco has lost nearly 25 pounds and “cut [his] body fat in half.” The premise may be as clichéd as any in baseball,...
Pirates set arbitration date with McGehee
The Pirates and Casey McGehee have an arbitration hearing scheduled for Feb. 16 if they cannot agree on terms of a contract before that time.
Pirates sign Juan Cruz to minor league deal
The Pirates announced today that veteran reliever Juan Cruz has signed a minor league deal that includes an invitation to spring training.
Cruz, 33, pitched for the Rays last season and posted a 3.88 ERA in 48 2/3 innings. Throughout his 11 season career, he has a 9.1 K/9 ratio and has served as a pretty good setup man.
Many people say he could end up being this year’s version...
Pirates Roundtable Podcast: Episode 1
Hopefully this will be the beginning of something semi-regular and fun. Last night, Jon of McEffect, Jim of North Side Notch, and Cory of Three Rivers Burgh Blog joined me in a podcast to discuss the Pirates’ offseason and some other random things. Specific topics include:
The additions of Clint Barmes, Rod Barajas, and Nate McLouth (for some reason we forgot Casey McGehee, I’m...
Pirates Sign Brian Tallet
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed left handed pitcher Brian Tallet, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. No word on whether the deal is a major league deal or a minor league deal.
Tallet has a career 4.79 ERA in 460 major league innings, pitching for three teams. Last year he split time between St. Louis and Toronto, but had poor results with a 9.45 ERA in 13.1 innings...
Report: Pirates to sign LHP Tallet
The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to sign left-handed pitcher Brian Tallet, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. It's unclear whether the lefty will receive a major league or minor league contract. The 34-year-old split the 2011 season between the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals. He posted a 9.45 ERA in 13 innings last season.Tallet posted a 3.38 ERA...
Pirates sign Brian Tallet
The Bucs signed veteran lefty Brian Tallet today. The 34 year-old has suffered through injuries and a couple of poor seasons recently, so I would assume that it’s a minor league deal.
Tallet has been reasonably effective against lefties, so he’ll probably join Daniel Moskos and Doug Slaten in the group that will be fighting for a second lefty bullpen slot behind Tony Watson...
Pirates sign Juan Cruz
The Bucs inked reliever Juan Cruz to a minor league deal (with an invite to Spring Training) on Wednesday.
Cruz is a 33-year old righty with 11 big-league seasons under his belt. His career ERA is 4.13, and last year with Tampa Bay he went 5-0 with a 3.88 ERA. He tends to put up good strikeout numbers (9.1 K/9 for his career) while walking a few too many (4.8 BB/9).
This actually...
