Brandon Inge Activated and Starting at Third Tonight

Brandon Inge has been activated from the DL and is starting at third tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated third baseman Brandon Inge, and have him in tonight’s lineup at third base. Inge was recently on a rehab assignment in Indianapolis, batting for a .150/.320/.283 line in 60 at-bats. The Pirates are going up against left-hander Cole Hamels tonight. Inge has done well...

Andrew McCutchen Is Pissed Off That MLB Network Showed Phillies Home Runs

Andrew McCutchen is one of baseball's most talented young players. Apparently he wants people to know it, too. After Wednesday's 5-3 defeat of the Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen was watching MLB Network, probably to admire himself, when he saw the Phillies-Pirates highlights. He was not happy with what...

First Pitch: The Pirates Prospects Podcast

For the last few years I’ve debated whether to add a podcast to the site. There are already some good podcasts out there at Bucs Dugout and Rumbunter, and I wasn’t sure that I could add anything which would be different than what was already on the site. With my move to Bradenton this year, and the opportunity for more live coverage, I decided that a podcast could add to the...

Game 20: Pirates 2 Braves 0

Of course Brandon Inge would be the player to get the key RBI double in this game. Of course he'd be the one to turn in two stellar plays at third base to keep the Phillies off of the board with the Pirates clinging to a 1-0 lead and the Phillies threatening. Of course that's how it was going to happen after me and most Pirate fans and bloggers spent a good part of the afternoon...

Pirates Keep Rolling with 6-4 Win Over Phillies

The Pirates’ offense jumped on starter Cliff Lee and the Phillies’ relievers for 14 hits for a 6-3 win Thursday afternoon. Add in the fact that manager Clint Hurdle made far more of the right moves than his counterpart Charlie Manuel, and the Bucs wrapped a key four-game series win. Gaby Sanchez hit his third homer of the season, trailing only Pedro Alvarez (4) in long balls...

Pirates 5, Phillies 3

Awesome comeback win for the Pirates tonight. Your heroes? Brandon Inge and Pedro Alvarez, of course! Those two (and several others) were key in helping the Bucs battle back and earn their second straight win – and their 11th in the last 15 games. The game started off as a pitcher’s duel between Roy Halladay and Wandy Rodriguez. Halladay seemed wild in the first inning but got...

Mazzaro steps up in Bucs bullpen

Righty Vin Mazzaro was selected from Indy on April 16 and joined the Pirates bullpen. Mazzaro, who's started 45 of his 69 games in the majors, was one of the last cuts in spring training camp. Mazzaro has made three appearances and has not allowed a run. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Mazzaro recently.

Pirates 6, Phillies 4

The Pirates came back to steal another victory from the Phillies on Thursday afternoon, clinching a big series win. The Bucs put their late-inning resolve on display yet again and won a crucial battle of bullpens for the second game in a row. James McDonald looked very sharp to open the game, but he faltered a bit and fell victim to the usual problem for Pirates starters: failing...

Pirates 2, Phillies 0

Jeff Locke pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Gaby Sanchez homered off Cole Hamels to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Tuesday night. Locke (2-1) struck out six and walked two. After wriggling out of a jam in the fourth, he retired his last eight batters - striking out three of the final four. Sanchez also doubled and Brandon Inge had an RBI...

Hamels Tough Luck Loser, Phillies Bats in Locke-down

In what was one of the more miserable games of the season, the Phillies fell to the Pirates, 2-0. Hamels Moves to 0-3: -Just call it the Curse of Cliff. When your starting pitcher throws well enough that he should have a victory. Cole was pretty much on his game from the start, except for mistakes to Brandon Inge and Gaby Sanchez that hurt him. Hamels has gotten better every start...

Draft Preview: Wilson Homers Twice, Bryant Sets HR Record, Manaea Injured

We are now in the 11th weekend of the college season and the start of the amateur draft is now just six weeks away. The Pirates have the #9 and #14 picks in the upcoming June draft. Throughout the college/HS season, leading up to the draft, we will cover the interesting players that are being discussed in the Pirates draft range. There will also be daily notes on past picks by the...

Domonic Brown goes full extension to make a catch

During Wednesday's Pirates-Phillies game, the much-maligned Domonic Brown made a catch in the top of the fifth inning that even his harshest critics had to respect. With none out, Pirates shortstop John McDonald hit a sinking liner to left field that looked destined to be a double. Brown got on his horse, stretched his arm to its absolute limits, and dove, somehow managing to...

All’s Well with Allie in West Virginia

His story has been told several times, but it just gets more interesting with seemingly every at-bat. Stetson Allie has an OPS of 1.093 in 19 games so far this season with West Virginia. Stetson Allie was drafted by the Pirates in the second round in 2010 and the club handed the hard-throwing right-hander from Ohio a hefty $2.25 million signing bonus. His performances on the mound...

The Phils’ bullpen let one get away, wasting a good start by Roy Halladay, as the Phils fall to the Pirates, 5-3.

Roy Halladay’s third straight strong start is wasted by the bullpen as the Phils lose late to the Pirates, 5-3. The Phils took the lead in the bottom of the first as, with one man out, Chase Utley hits a solo home run, his fourth home run of the season, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Pirates tied the game up at one-all in the top of the fourth as, with two men on, and with two...
