New York collected its fourth walk-off win of the year last night. The Mets are tied for second in the majors with the Giants with their four walk-off victories. Cincinnati is first with five such wins. The Mets last three wins at home have come in walk-off fashion.
Desperate to help Ike Davis emerge from his season-long funk, Collins said he wrestled with the decision to bench his first baseman Thursday against left-hander Jeff Locke. Then Davis went ahead and came through anyway, hammering a tiebreaking double into center field in the seventh inning after entering as part of a double-switch.
Mike Baxter for the second time in three days delivered a walk-off RBI single, this time against Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli, and the Mets won 3-2 at Citi Field on Thursday night. The Mets’ last three home...

The Mets lost a sleeper this evening to the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 7-3 at a sparsely filled Citi Field.
Shaun Marcum was making his third start of the season for the Mets and once again failed to last five innings. The truth is he’s looked awful every time out there, but tonight was the worst we’ve seen yet.
Marcum, now 0-3, saw his ERA balloon to 8.59 for the season...
I absolutely hate recapping games like this one. Just like an NFL team feeds off the quarterback, I believe baseball teams can feed off the starting pitcher in that same way.

You know, I had a thought the other day about the Mets’ lineup. When you look up and down the order and go across the diamond, what Met players are solid no-brainer starters for almost each and every day?
With the way Ike Davis is struggling, he is now teetering on the edge of becoming a platoon player until he sorts outs his struggles. Otherwise, Davis should be a cornerstone...
These early exits by Shaun Marcum are not what the Mets had in mind when they signed him last winter.
Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer off Marcum - a call that was correctly overturned by baseball's beleaguered umpires - and Wandy Rodriguez pitched the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-3 victory over New York on Friday night.
Marcum (0-3) looked uncomfortable on the mound and worked...
Gee pitched five shutout innings yesterday and hopefully Marcum will do him one more tonight, starting at 7:10. MetsBlog says that Jeurys Familia is unavailable tonight, so hopefully Marcum doesn’t have an early exit.

Terry Collins says a lot of things that will raise eyebrows whenever we go to these pre and post game press conferences. Many times he’ll say one thing on Monday and then do the exact opposite on Wednesday.
Just to cite two recent examples remember when he proclaimed Collin Cowgill the everyday center fielder on Opening Day? Cowgill then proceeds to start in just 6 of the next...
The Pirates faced another struggling pitcher tonight, and this time they made him pay. Shaun Marcum lasted only four and a third innings, and Wandy Rodriguez gave up just one run as the Pirates won game two of the four-game series, 7-3. When Marcum struck out the first two batters he faced and then got…

You almost have to feel bad for the Mets’ pitchers who have to follow Matt Harvey these days.
With the legend of Harvey nearly growing to ‘perfect’ proportions, the rest of the staff (sans Jonathon Niese) have to be suffering from an inferiority complex. So far on the season, Shaun Marcum, Dillon Gee and Jeremy Hefner are now a combined 2-10 with a 5.59 ERA. (And let’s...

New York will play consecutive four-game series (vs. Pittsburgh and at St. Louis) for just the third time since 2008. The Mets played two straight four-game sets last year, July 26-August 2 at Arizona and at San Francisco...
Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke is probably the best Pirates blog on the interwebs. Here's what Patrick had to say about Friday's matchup beforehand:
Shaun Marcum, someone that seemed like a decent fit for the Pirates while the whole Francisco Liriano debacle was happening, is going for the Mets. He dealt with shoulder problems in camp and neck problems after that...

Before the game? When I said that the Pirates needed to play better? Pretty much what I had in mind was a solid Wandy Rodriguez start and piling some runs on Shaun Marcum. And hey! Here we are!
