Of their seven free agents, the Pirates are eager to re-sign three: Right-hander A.J. Burnett, outfielder Marlon Byrd and shortstop Clint Barmes writes MLB reporter Tom Singer. GM Neal Huntington is pushing hard to sign both Byrd and Barmes, Singer reports, and they hope to have both deals completed withing their five-day exclusive negotiating window. Burnett, he says, is pretty much on the record that he will either pitch for the Pirates or retire, so they’ll negotiate with him after they take care of business with Byrd and Barmes. Mike Francesa of WFAN announced that he has knowledge that the Mets were going hard after free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd as long as he doesn’t cost too much. But that won’t likely happen if the Bucs sign him before he hits the open market. Byrd was one of the most productive players on the Mets and Pirates batting .291/.336/.531 this season with a career-high 24 home runs, 35 doubles, 79 runs scored and and 88 RBI, all for the bargain price of $1 mill...

Pirates not likely to offer Morneau during exclusive rights period

Justin Morneau told the Tribune-Review on Thursday the Pirates are unlikely to extend an offer to the free agent first baseman during the exclusive negotiating period, which ends Monday when free agents can begin signing with other teams. Teams could begin negotiating with their own free agents after the conclusion of the World Series. The Pirates acquired the former American League...

Pirates LHP Rodriguez exercises $13 million option

Pirates left-hander Wandy Rodriguez has exercised his $13 million player option for 2014. The 34-year-old went 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA for Pittsburgh, missing the final four months of the season with discomfort in his left forearm. Rodriguez attempted to come back from the discomfort twice only to have it return. His deal originally included a team option, but it became his when the...

Burnett's status is offseason priority for Pirates

A year ago, general manager Neal Huntington and the Pirates identified one major hole to address in free agency, locked in on veteran catcher Russell Martin and aggressively pursued him until he was crouched behind home plate at PNC Park. This year, a more patient approach will guide the franchise when free agency begins at the conclusion of the World Series, Huntington said in...

Pirates rumors: Trade for Giancarlo Stanton is ‘very possible’

“Very possible”: that is how MLB.com’s Pittsburgh Pirates beat writer Tom Singer describes the Pirates’ chances of landing Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in a trade. Singer reports that the Pirates will most likely re-sign Marlon Byrd, a late-season trade acquisition from the New York Mets, so they would not have excess money left to sign higher-priced veterans...

The offseason begins…

We’re now officially in to the MLB offseason, and teams are already off and running in their attempts to shape up next year’s rosters. There were a few minor, unsurprising Pirates news bits at the end of the week: Wandy Rodriguez exercised his player option for 2014. That was a no-brainer for him after missing more than half of the year with an injury, and he’ll make a healthy...

Guess Who’s Back, Back Again, Wandy’s Back, Tell A Friend

No surprise here but my arch-enemy Rob Biertempfel is reporting that LHP Wandy Rodriguez has in fact exercised his 2014 option and he will be with our Pittsburgh Pirates. Wandy Rodriguez has told #Pirates that he has exercised $13 million player option in his contract for 2014. #NoSurprise — Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib) November 1, 2013…
