Wandy Rodriguez The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Saturday that pitcher Wandy Rodriguez will be shut down for the remainder of the season. The left-hander has missed more than three months with left forearm tightness and arthritis of the left elbow. Rodriguez appeared to be on the right track after pitching a pain-free simulated game earlier this month, and he went on to pitch in a rehab game on Sept. 6 in Triple-A Indianapolis. All appeared to be well for the lefty. He was suppose to pitch a simulated game on Thursday and could have been activated from the disabled list, but Rodriguez continues to feel pain and discomfort in his arm. “I don’t feel a hundred percent and pain-free,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t think I can go out there and give my best to the team.” The Pirates consulted with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. “Dr. Andrews recommended a cortisone injection,” Rodriguez said. “But it was up to me and it was my decision. I won’t take the injection because cortisone is only to kill the pain, but not heal the injury.” Rodriguez is set to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection, which he had already received on July 1. “He’s put so much into this, he’s worked so hard to get into position to pitch again because of the want to help the team,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “We’re going to turn our focus to 2014 and let him heal. ” The veteran was 6-4 with a 3.59 ERA with the Pirates this season.  He can become a free-agent at the end of the season, but he holds a $13 million player option to return in 2014. With Rodriguez done for the season, the Pirates will most likely keep Gerrit Cole in the playoff rotation. The other option would be Jeff Locke, but Cole has had a much better second half of the season. Cole has an ERA of 1.38 during the month of September and has dazzled his last three starts. Locke has been unreliable until this week when he tossed seven innings of three hit baseball on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs.
