Boom or bust. That’s Carlos Pena in a nutshell. OK, so he hasn’t topped .227 in any of the last three seasons and has averaged a modest 82 RBI over the last two seasons, but there’s still some life in that bat of his. He hits a lot of fly balls and touches one homer every five flies (an elite rate). He’s completely unable to provide anything in the way of batting average, but if you’re looking for a cheap source of power production (read: HR and RBI) then Pena might be your man.
Best case scenario: Ryan Howard (PHI)
Similar players: Mark Trumbo (LAA), Adam Dunn (CHW), Adam Lind (TOR)
Worst case scenario: 2011′s Adam Dunn (CHW) but probably with more power
Power, hitting versus RHP. Play the splits right with Pena and you could strike it big. He’s a career .251 hitter versus RHP versus .211 career versus LHP and has the 12th most home runs in the league over the last three seasons, a fantasy relevant time frame.
Batting average, hitting versus LHP. Pena has bat...

Matt Garza peaks at the right time. Maybe he should run for office. What price do you put on clutch?Matt Garza may be getting better. His ERA has improved nearly every year, last year's 3.32 being his best. But his record was 10-10. I know we don't count wins and losses like we used to. But tell that to Mr. Verlander.Garza's career won-loss record is 52-54. Three of those...
Could the first big trade of 2012 send Matt Garza out of Chicago? The Cubs have reportedly been talking to several teams, including the Marlins, about the 28-year-old right-hander.
The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority (“IFSA”) was created in 1987 by the Illinois General Assembly to create and reconstruct sports stadiums for professional teams in Illinois. The IFSA owns and operates U.S. Cellular Field and receives annual debt payments for bonds related to renovations of the stadium. In 2001, the IFSA also contributed to the renovations made to Soldier...
Pitching depth will cost Yankees money or prospects
It's been a very slow offseason for Carlos Pena, at least in terms of hot stove rumors. The 33-year-old first baseman was understandably overshadowed by Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder heading into free agency, and even now he's still playing second fiddle to Fielder, a fellow Scott Boras client.
Pena is one of the best remaining free agent power hitters, hitting at...
It was a quiet holiday weekend, but here is the latest hot stove buzz circulating around MLB:

The Cubs and Reed Johnson have agreed to terms on a one-year, Major League contract, the team announced. It's a $1.15MM deal, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune (on Twitter). Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported the agreement on December 21st (via Twitter).
Johnson, 35, has spent three of the last four seasons with the Cubs, and is coming off one of his...
The Blue Jays continue exploring ways of improving their rotation, but they’re unlikely to acquire Matt Garza from the Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Garza is under team control through 2013 and the Blue Jays are wary of trading top prospects for a relatively short-term addition. There doesn't appear to be a leading suitor for the right-hander at the moment...
