Have we seen the end of Ichiro Suzuki as a productive fantasy outfielder? I’m going to say no, but we are definitely getting close. Ichiro hit under .300 for the first time in his career (.272) and posted his worst ISO (.064) in 2011. He’s also gone three straight years with fewer than 90 runs scored. That being said, he still stole 40 bases last year, his .295 BABIP was much lower than his career rate (.351) and his xBA (.293) was not the usual .310-plus but undoubtedly better than the .272 we saw. I think Ichiro can get back to hitting .300 with close to 40 steals for at least one more season, but the Mariners offense is so bad these days that 90 runs is unfortunately the best case for him. Best case scenario: Michael Bourn (ATL) with fewer runs Similar players: Cameron Maybin (SD), Emilio Bonifacio (MIA), Coco Crisp (OAK) Worst case scenario: Juan Pierre (PHI) Strengths Steals, batting average. Even at 37, Ichiro posted back-to-back 40-steal seasons with an 83.7 perc...

2012 Seattle Mariners Projected Roster

Seattle Mariners Manager Eric Wedge has several new roster pieces after a busy offseason. After last week's events, Mariners fans have a clearer picture of what their team will look like in 2012.   Without Prince Fielder, the Mariners need to find another way to drastically improve their offensive output from last season in order to contend. Another issue is Michael Pineda...

AL West Celebrity Death Match: Pujols vs. Hernandez

Everyone Wants To See This One! In ancient times as two armies came to face each other in battle they would call upon their champion to represent them in a one on one battle to the death. The A.L. West is primed to be a battle field and in the third week of May the Mariners will call upon their champion, Felix “The King” Hernandez to face Jose Alberto “The Machine” Pujols...

Guillen returns to Seattle on minor league deal

Carlos Guillen is returning to Seattle after agreeing to a minor league contract with the Mariners. The 36-year-old spent the past eight seasons in Detroit where he was a three-time All-Star and hit .308 in his career with the Tigers playing five positions: left field, third base, shortstop, second base and first base. Guillen started his career with the Mariners from 1998-03, playing...

Mariners Give Guillen One Last Go

Among Wednesday’s moves, the Seattle Mariners announced the signing of Carlos Guillen to a minor league contract. After a very successful career with the Tigers, Guillen returns to the team he broke into the majors with all the way back in 1998. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t appear Guillen has anything left in the tank. Although Guillen made an impact as an above-average...

Explaining my position on the Mariners and 2015...again

Some of you are livid with me for writing that I don't think the Mariners front office truly believes they will make the playoffs before 2015. You just can't understand why I would want to believe that. I've received emails from people suggesting I'm upset the Mariners did not get Prince Fielder. No, that's not it. My take on how the Mariners view their playoff...

Sluggers like Montero becoming more valuable as power declines in MLB

One interesting twist to the Jesus Montero trade (or as it's known in New York, the Michael Pineda trade) is the premium that's starting to be put on power-hitting prospects within the industry.

Mariners start packing for Spring Training

It’s almost here. The baseball season is about to begin. Or, at least, Spring Training is about to begin. The Seattle Mariners have started packing up their gear for the trip to Peoria, Ariz. Practice itself won’t begin until Feb. 11, but all that equipment’s gotta get south somehow. From the official Mariners blog: Home [...]

Mariners will be looking for better approach and discipline at the plate this season

Now that we know the Mariners will be staying young for the next little while, it may be best to explore some of the things to look for in 2012. Too many people will be focused on things like won-lost record while missing the bigger picture of what's going on. The won-lost record won't tell you much until it starts approaching 90. I've seen too many teams soar past 80...

Would Mariners have tried to land Brett Lawrie instead of Jesus Montero? You betcha

Interesting report out of Toronto from old buddy Jeff Blair, who I used to work with all the way back in Montreal days in the early 1990s. Blair is pretty plugged in when it comes to the Blue Jays and their ownership, so I believe him when he says that the Mariners first tried to trade Michael Pineda to Toronto for third baseman Brett Lawrie. The Blue Jays are said to have declined...

Carlos Guillen returning to the Mariners – kind of

Remember 2001, when the Mariners were the best team in the country? I know, it’s hard to imagine that was only 11 years ago, since the current Mariners make it seem a lifetime ago. Well, a key member of that 2001 team is returning to the Mariners organization. Carlos Guillen, who played shortstop that season, [...]

The Seattle Mariners signed infielder Carlos Guillen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training Wednesday.
