The Miami Marlins controversial pitcher Carlos Zambrano reminded all of us yesterday that we do have pitchers in baseball that still know how to hit. Zambrano's solo blast off the Phillie's Joe Blanton put him into a seventh place-tie with former Cardinal star pitcher Bob Gibson and John Clarkson, who pitched in the big leagues from 1882-1894, on the all-time list for most home runs by a pitcher with 24. In the seventh, Zambrano also dropped down a beautiful bunt that he beat out for a base hit. Big league pitchers just don't hit any more. Certainly not in the American League since the introduction of baseball's "Designated Hitter." The DH rule changed dramatically the way baseball's played in the American League. I'm not a supporter of the DH rule. The DH rule was adopted by the American League in 1973. It's enabled many slugger's who otherwise would have been retired from the game to stay around in a DH role adding extra...

A Third In: Promising

The Marlins have completed the first third of the season. Things are starting to be more structured in how the season will sort out. And for the Marlins, even though things looked very bleak earlier, things look promising for potentially achieving anything this season. Yes, anything – including a third World Series championship. First, we can begin with the starting pitching. So...

Braves look to slow down Reyes, Marlins

The Miami Marlins are just percentage points out of first place in the NL East race. The Atlanta Braves aren't far behind. Jose Reyes looks to extend the longest active hitting streak in the majors as the Marlins welcome the Braves to their new stadium for the first time Tuesday night. Miami (31-23) is three-thousandths of a percentage point behind Washington in the East...

First Series Loss Since April

The Miami Marlins dropped their first series in over a month by falling to the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Wednesday.   A day after being shutout, Miami was only able to put together two hits.    The Marlins are now two games behind the first place Washington Nationals in the National League East after climbing into a tie prior to this series. Josh Johnson gave up two runs in seven...

LHP Andrew Heaney looks to contribute to the Miami Marlins as soon as 2013

Despite last night’s ghastly 11-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves, the Miami Marlins realize their ugly April is behind them and they will continue to win. Their timely hitting, solid pitching, and the return(ing) of CP Heath Bell has been the recipe for victories across the board. The last time the Miami Marlins lost a series is more ancient history than contemporary....

Marlins' quiet bats spoil Johnson's solid start

MIAMI (AP) -- Randall Delgado pitched 6 1-3 innings and contributed his first RBI of the year Wednesday, and three relievers completed a two-hitter to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 2-1 Wednesday night. Video: Dan Uggla is first to hit ugly Marlins home run sculpture

He spent his first five years in the league with the Miami Marlins, but though he is wearing a Braves uniform, he will go down in Marlins history as the first player to hit that hideous home run celebration sculpture thing out in left-center at Marlins Park. Uggla’s home run is credited as a 432-ft [...]

Marlins tied for first despite lack of clutch hitting

Manager Ozzie Guillen said he was flipping through a packet of daily statistics the other day when he saw something that made his jaw drop -- his Marlins are among the worst teams in baseball when it comes to situational hitting. "I was, 'Wow,' " Guillen said. "How the (bleep) are we where we are right now?" The Marlins are 31-23 record and in a virtual...

The Phils lose two straight games as both games starters are hurt by home runs, as they drop a pair to the Marlins, losing 5-4 and 5-1.

Phils starters are hurt by the long ball, as the team loses a pair to the Marlins, losing by the scores of 5-4 and 5-1. On Saturday, the Phils took the lead in the first as, with runners on second and third, and with one man out, Carlos Ruiz hits into an RBI ground out, three-unassisted, knocking in Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, moved up to second base on Hunter Pence’s...

Sanchez's struggles vs. Braves continue in loss

MIAMI (AP) -- Dan Uggla hit two homers in his first game at Marlins Park, including a tape-measure blow off the home-run sculpture, and Tim Hudson pitched a five-hitter for his 13th career shutout Tuesday night to help the Atlanta Braves beat Miami 11-0. Uggla hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, and he scored a direct hit on the middle of the sculpture with a two-run homer in...

'Li'l Jose' doll making rounds at Marlins games

By Eric Esteban Before the start of Sundays Marlins game in Philadelphia, shortstop Jose Reyes was feeling adventurous. While Miami teammates shagged fly balls and lined up for batting practice, Reyes was at Pats King of Steaks downing a signature sandwich and exploring the City of Brotherly Love. How he was able to be in two places at once? The sight-seeing Reyes was actually...

J.J. looks to get Miami back on track vs. Braves

Tune into FOX Sports Florida at 6:30 p.m. to watch the Miami Marlins take on the Atlanta Braves. Dan Uggla had plenty of good moments during his five seasons in Florida as a member of the Marlins. No matter the ballpark, he's been pretty dangerous as a visitor with the Atlanta Braves. Uggla looks to stay hot and help Atlanta earn its ninth victory in its last 11 road meetings...

Zambrano, Ramirez homer as Marlins top Phils

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Carlos Zambrano homered and pitched into the eighth inning, and Hanley Ramirez went deep, too, to lead the Miami Marlins to a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. Zambrano (4-3) allowed four hits, walked two and struck out seven in before leaving with two outs in the eighth to win for the seventh time in nine games. Jose Reyes went 2 for 5...

Big Z and the Fish Dominate Big Joe and the Phils; Take Two of Three in Philly

In the rubber match of this Marlins-Phillies series, big Joe took the mound against big Z, Carlos Zambrano. Blanton was looking to redeem himself from his past couple of starts in which he was lit up. He is 4-5 this year with a 5.05 ERA. Zambrano is 3-3 this year with a 3.00 ERA.  Miami put up two runs with a pair of solo home runs early on. In the third, it was Carlos Zambrano...
