With family and local ties, Mark Leiter Jr. is one of the best stories out of this year’s Phillies draft class.  The son of former Phils hurler Mark Leiter Sr., nephew of former big leaguer Al Leiter as well as Kurt Leiter who was also a pro pitcher and a product of Toms River North High School and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Leiter Jr. has been enjoying success since he was selected in the 22nd round this year. In 13 outings to start his professional career, the 22-year-old had gone 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA before earning a promotion from the Gulf Coast League Phillies to Class A Lakewood recently.  Leiter, who stands six feet tall and weighs around 195 pounds, has not allowed a run and has struck out 12 while walking only two in two starts (11 innings) since joining the BlueClaws. Last week I spoke with the right-hander, who grew up as a Phillies fan, about his draft experience, coming from a baseball pedigree and his family’s hobby of collecting baseball cards.  Read ahead...

Why Rush Halladay Back? To Try To Trade Him?

With the ink barely drying on the tale of Roy Halladay‘s successful comeback start against the Diamondbacks, I’m here to suggest something pretty outrageous. The serendipitous aligning of the stars that allowed Halladay to pitch on Sunday was long ago a plan written in ink, Whited Out, and then put back down in Sharpie. The detour came last Tuesday night, when Doc threw only...

18-inning Marathon Results in Early Return For Doc

Roy Halladay, Image- Jay Floyd Righty hurler Roy Halladay, who was slated to appear in another rehab outing for Double-A Reading on Sunday will return to the big league club instead, following a marathon of baseball Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park. In Saturday night’s (Sunday morning’s?) 12-7 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, the Phillies sent nine pitchers and two...

Eagles, Phillies and a blue chest of porn

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Hollis Thomas shared a little secret the team has with baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies – an abundance or porn stored in the bowels of the Vet, where both teams shared a shower and rest area.

Halladay Shows Signs of Life In Return After Surgery

After missing 3 months of the season due to right shoulder surgery, Roy Halladay finally returned to the mound for the Phillies yesterday. The stars aligned in favor of Sunday ticket holders when the Phillies used up originally scheduled starter Tyler Cloyd in Saturday night’s 18 inning, 7-hour marathon loss to the Diamondbacks. Halladay was supposed to make a rehab start in Reading...

Phillies fall short in 18 innings against D-backs

Casper Wells never expected to be warming up in the bullpen in the wee hours of the morning. However, the Phillies' outfielder was forced into pitching duties against the Diamondbacks in a record-setting, marathon game that ended when Arizona scored five runs off Wells in the 18th inning and beat Philadelphia 12-7 Saturday night. The teams combined to use 20 pitchers in a contest...

Phillies Look To Build Off Of Wins As Ethan Martin Gets Nod Against Dbacks

Another game, another walk off win. The Phillies have won three straight games after coming back late and winning in walkoff fashion. First with Michael Young on Wednesday, Domonic Brown Thursday and Chase Utley last night, the Phillies have certainly been exciting. Tonight they will look to build off of...

Phillies' Domonic Brown hoping to return today

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown exited Saturday's marathon contest against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third inning after experiencing soreness in his heel. It later came out that Brown was dealing with an Achilles injury, an ailment that has been hampering him for a few days, according to Todd Zolecki of Brown was out of the Phillies' starting...

Diamondbacks-Phillies all-nighter by the numbers

The Diamondbacks and Phillies went 18 innings Saturday afternoon ... and evening ... and night ... to the tune of 7 hours and 6 minutes. It was the longest game in the majors this season, the longest in baseball since 1989 and the longest in the history of either franchise. The final out was recorded at 2:12 a.m. Philadelphia time. It's hard to really put into perspective how...

Ryno’s Got The Phillies Streaking

Maybe its the fact that Sandberg has players report an hour earlier, or maybe it’s that the Phillies couldn’t get much worse than 4 – 19, but for some reason, new manager Ryne Sandberg has the Phillies playing well. The Phils just earned Sanberg his first three-game winning streak, and even before the past three […]

Ethan Martin Only Gets Two Outs; Phillies Come Back, But Casper Wells Takes Loss In 18th Inning

Tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks got busy in a hurry. Phillies starter Ethan Martin opened the game with two quick outs against leadoff hitter Tony Campana and two-hole hitter Adam Eaton. But those were the only outs Martin would record in this one. Beginning with Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt...
