Tuesday was a sad day in Cardinals Nation as St. Louis Cardinals fans learned that Chris Carpenter, the longtime ace of the starting rotation, would miss all of 2013 due to lingering effects in his shoulder. Carpenter's future in baseball is in doubt and he is likely done for his career. The Cardinals were depending on Carpenter in 2013. With Carpenter out, there is now a gaping hole in the starting rotation. Should the Cardinals pursue the very familiar Kyle Lohse to replace Chris Carpenter in the starting rotation? Lohse spent the past five seasons with the Cardinals, compiling a 55-35 record, before becoming a free agent this off-season  Lohse was offered arbitration by the Cardinals, but he turned down the $13.3 million, one-year offer from the Cardinals. Lohse could be a very adequate, veteran replacement for Carpenter. But the Cardinals have other options as well. Youngsters Shelby Miller, Joe Kelly, and Trevor Rosenthal all figure to be given a look as a starter ...

Chris Carpenter to miss 2013 season, may retire

Right handed pitcher Chris Carpenter may be headed for retirement. Carpenter experienced numbness and bruising in his right shoulder and hard after throwing off a mound. While Carpenter has not announced that he plans to retire the Cardinals and general manager John Mozeliak will have to fill the void of not having him in the clubhouse or on the mound. Carpenter missed nearly all...

Cards' Carpenter likely out for 2013

Chris Carpenter is unlikely to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals this season and his career may be over because of a nerve injury that kept him out most of last year. General manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Carpenter has renewed numbness and some bruising in his right shoulder and hand. He will get an additional medical evaluation, but Mozeliak says Carpenter is unlikely...

In Honor of Chris Carpenter’s Presumptive Retirement

Chris Carpenter is done. Finuto. That arm is about as sturdy as a hang-nail right now. The Cardinals held a press conference today to address the Canadian pitcher’s future in baseball, and what came out of it was that he’s suffering from zingers and numbness in the shoulders and neck. That’s a real shame. I don’t mean to be a dick, but I’m not going to miss the guy. He’s...

Forced Out: Chris Carpenter the latest to have injuries derail career

There are really only two ways to go out in sports.  That's one of the biggest differences between normal jobs and the jobs of professional athletes.  In professional athletics, a player can finish his career on top of the world, in the middle of the pack, or at the bottom, but if that player chose the time to call it quits and wasn't forced, he's generally happy.  The...

Ace may not battle back this time

Off the field, Chris Carpenter was polite, soft-spoken, a friendly guy with a warm smile. On the field, he was fierce, vociferous, an intimidator who snarled and scowled. It was as if Carpenter was a chippy hockey player on the mound -- no surprise, considering that he was an All-State defenseman at Trinity (NH) High School. But that edge, you see, is what made him great. On Tuesday...

Chris Carpenter overreaction reaction

It is probably best to start this article with three declarations. I cannot fully express my admiration and respect for what Chris Carpenter has accomplished for the St. Louis Cardinals over the last decade. That was most recently the case in 2011, when he made what appears to be his last stand – pitching over 270 innings at age 36 despite an injury-checkered past. Carp led the...

Cardinals rumors: St. Louis has ‘negligible’ interest in Kyle Lohse

With the news that St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter is expected to miss the entire 2013 season due to an injury setback, some began to wonder if the team would elect to reunite with free agent Kyle Lohse. However, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told reporters he likes the current makeup of his club, and the team’s interest in Lohse is “negligible ...

Report: Red Sox ‘Highly Unlikely’ to Go After Kyle Lohse in Free Agency

The Red Sox’ rotation looks pretty much set for 2013, but with Kyle Lohse still available in free agency, there have been some rumblings about whether Boston should make a play for the reigning 16-game winner. It looks like it’s time to pump the brakes on those rumors. According to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford, a major league source said that it is “highly unlikely” the Red...

Cardinals Pitching Forced to Evolve Post-Carpenter

Without rushing to judgment or burying a guy too early, time to face facts:  the future in regards to competitive baseball is not looking too promising for Chris Carpenter. With a re-occurrence of the nerve injury that kept him sidelined for much of 2012, the future of the 37-year old pitcher looks to not contain much more active baseball. Some of the focus has inevitably shifted...

St. Louis Cardinals never got to fully enjoy Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright era

The St. Louis Cardinals have been blessed to have two of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball throughout the past seven years. Unfortunately, they rarely got to see that blessing in full effect. The Cardinals announced Tuesday that Chris Carpenter won’t pitch in 2013, which likely ends his career as a player for the Cardinals. It also ends a very successful era that still...

Chris Carpenter Hurt and Probably Finished

Earlier Tuesday, word got around that the St. Louis Cardinals had called an afternoon press conference. Word got around because the Cardinals spread it. Immediately, there was some speculation that the Cardinals had made an acquisition. There was also speculation that the Cardinals were going to announce a long-term contract extension for a player or coach. But then there were whispers...

Kyle Lohse Lucked Out

The time for pitchers and catchers to report for spring training is down to days. With that Kyle Lohse is still unsigned. He is thought to be the best free agent pitcher available but hasn’t been linked to many teams this offseason. This could be for many reasons. He is represented by Scott Boras, an … Continue reading »

St. Louis Cardinals: Comparing Chris Carpenter and Bob Gibson

The St. Louis Cardinals are going to sorely miss Chris Carpenter in 2013 not only for his ability to shutdown the opposition with a darting fastball and a nasty hook, but also for his demeanor, presence and will to win. Many believe that nobody since Bob Gibson has worn the Cardinals uniform and taken the hill with as much tenacity, grit, determination, competitive fire and intimidation...
