Found April 16, 2012 on Mets Fever:
For the past 3 years, the Mets have been searching for a magical solution to enhance their offensive output. After David Wright returned from a fractured pinky to blast a home run in his first at-bat, Jason Bay took notice and jammed a finger of his own. During his first game back tonight, Bay proved to be a key player in the Mets victory.

The New York Mets (7-3) defeated the Atlanta Braves (5-5) behind a phenomenal pitching performance from Dillon Gee, an incredible effort from Jason Bay and Ike Davis' second home run in as many days.

Dillon Gee (1-1, 2.92 ERA) continued the trend of dominant pitching performances from the club, pitching 7 innings and using a wide array of pitches to keep the Braves off balance. They key to Gee's success has always been how well he can control his pitches, and tonight he was spectacular in allowing only one walk to Eric Hinske, who Gee blatantly didn't want any part of with 2 runners on base. Gee struck out an impressive 5 Braves and allowed only 1 run during his start.

Gee was aided by Jason Bay, who returned to the lineup after sitting out with a jammed finger. Jack Wilson, who to that point had been hitless on the season, drove Dillon Gee's pitch deep to left field for what looked to be a sure home run. Bay leaped at the wall (Although not quite in Endy Chavez fashion) and took the ball back in, which was going to go over the yellow line. To add to his spectacular defensive effort, Bay blasted his 2nd home run in 4 days to give the Mets an insurance run in the top of the 9th.

Although dominant during his first start against the Mets, Tommy Hanson has now lost both outings against the Mets this season. Today he was slightly less impressive than he was during his opening day effort, allowing 5 runs, 4 earned, and 5 hits while only striking out 4. Hanson's biggest mistake came against Ike Davis, who crushed a pitch into the right field seats for a 3-run shot to break the game open to 4-1.

The Mets are now 4-0 on the season against Atlanta and will look to improve their record tomorrow evening at 7:10 PM ET as Johan Santana makes his 3rd start of the year.

Boiling Points:
  • Jon Rauch is no longer perfect this season, giving up his first base hit of the season. He managed to pitch a scoreless 8th despite the leadoff single.
  • Josh Thole scored on a wild pitch to tack on an insurance run.
  • David Wright remained hot, singling in his 1st inning at-bat before walking later in the game. He's hitting a minuscule .542 on the year.
  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis is quietly doing his job well and hitting to boot, getting on base twice more tonight and having a nice run at it out of the 8th hole, hitting .292.

Wright Becomes All Time Mets RBI Leader, But Does That Deserve An Extension?

A team source told Andy Martino of the Daily News that a contract extension for David Wright is not on the “front burner” right now, but added that his gut feeling was that a new contract extension would get done. Today, David Wright eclipsed another franchise record with his three RBI against the Braves this afternoon, tying Darryl Strawberry for the most RBI in Mets history...

Maybe the Mets won’t be so terrible?

Lucas Duda, David Wright and Ike Davis will (hopefully) provide the power for the Mets lineup in 2012 In an offseason to forget, the New York Mets slashed payroll, begged people to come to Citi Field, lost Gary Carter to cancer, lost their best player to a division rival in free agency and settled a massive lawsuit.  Other than that, the Mets 2012 offseason was pretty boring. So...
