New York Mets
The New York Mets (11-8) successfully completed a sweep of the Miami Marlins (7-11) this afternoon in walk off fashion as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a bases loaded single to end the game.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the 9th inning, Heath Bell had immediate trouble controlling his pitches and walked David Wright. Bell's inability to find his control led him to a full count on Lucas Duda, who grounded to 1st but advanced Wright to 2nd in the process. The wheels would fall off for Bell from here, as he walked 3 consecutive batters (Ike Davis, Josh Thole and Justin Turner) to walk in the tying run. The star of the afternoon is undoubtedly Justin Turner, who battled with Bell for 13 pitches before finally drawing the walk. Although Scott Hairston induced the 2nd out, Nieuwenhuis hit a line drive to bring the game home. The Mets were able to battle Bell for 46 pitched through his 2/3 of an inning and his 3rd blown save of the year.Jonathon Niese (ND, 2.81 ERA)
was brilliant this afternoon, pitching 7 innings while allowing only 2 runs and striking out 6. With his impressive outing today, Niese has turned all 4 of his starts this season into "quality" outings. Ramon Ramirez
bounced back from a few rough outings to pitch 2 scoreless innings and keep the game close which ultimately allowed the Mets to pick up on the Marlins mistakes.Kirk Nieuwenhuis
has certainly made a name for himself over the first few weeks of his major league career and will undoubtedly be starting, possibly in left field, when Andres Torres returns Monday night in Houston. Nieuwenhuis lead off the game with a leadoff triple and had the walk off hit, collecting 3 on the day and bumping his average to .333.
The biggest news coming out of the afternoon comes from Mike Pelfrey
, who will be heading to Dr. Andrews tomorrow afternoon to likely undergo season ending Tommy John surgery. Pelfrey, who is currently on his first DL stint with a partial tear of a ligament in his elbow, is a non-tender candidate at the end of the season and could come back for much cheaper than anticipated.
The New York Mets are now 10-4 against National League East opponents this season. They'll head to Colorado to open a 3 game set tomorrow evening at 8:10 PM ET with Chris Schwinden making his first start of the season.
BEST OF MAXIM
Kirk Nieuwenhuis; it’s almost as hard to spell his name as it is for pitchers to get him out. Kirk came up this year after Opening Day to replace the injured Andres Torres and has performed with the finesse of a seasoned veteran. Whether it’s in the middle of the order, or leading off, the 24-year old centerfielder has found a way to get on base.
He doesn’t particularly exceed...

New York Mets third baseman David Wright has had a rough past few seasons, battling injuries and a team that has essentially fallen apart around him. But on Wednesday night the 29-year-old finally had a reason to celebrate, as he broke the franchise’s all-time record for runs batted in.

Mets 5 - Marlins 1
David Wright drilled a 2 run homerun in the bottom of the 6th inning, giving RA Dickey all the runs he needed as the Mets topped the Marlins 5-1. David’s clutch blast put him at the top of the Mets all time RBI list. Following the game, the normally modest, Wright could not contain his joy; informing the press that he intended to celebrate old school style: “I’m planning
David Wright set a historic team record last night when he homered off Mark Buehrle to give the Mets a 2-1 lead, a game they ultimately would win 5-1. Those two RBI were the 734th and 735th of his career, setting the Mets record that was previously held by Darryl Strawberry. It’s amazing that he’s in his 9th season with the Mets. Even if he only finishes out his current contract...
David Wright set the Mets’ all-time career RBI record last night, passing Darryl Strawberry, but he was already high on the list of the greatest Mets position players of all time. In fact, by Wins Above Replacement, Wright already is the G.M.O.A.T. — Greatest Met Of All Time. (Other than Tom Seaver, of course. No shame in that. Tom Terrific is probably one of the two or three...
Whether new to the job or an experienced veteran, closers had a hard time filling that job description on Thursday. Heath Bell, one of the most consistent closer in recent years, had one of his worst performances when he walked four batters and gave up a hit to allow two runs in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Mets. Bell may need some time to get over that game both mentally...
With the Mets set to start a weekend set against the Rockies in Colorado, it’s only natural for us to think about power and home runs that seem to fly out of that place with the thin air.
You can bet that the Mets are thinking about it as well. Speaking of betting, sports betting websites can be found at this link. With the rut that Ike Davis is in, this is a bad idea for him....
