Found July 22, 2012 on The Daily Stache:

It’s finally happened.  The Mets are back at the .500 mark, and Miguel Batista was finally DFA’d after another abysmal performance yesterday.  It’s pretty amazing how one player has had such a big hand in the Mets downward spiral.  It’s unfortunate that it took management so long to make this move.  But it is what it is, and maybe this could be addition by subtraction.  With Batista finally being axed and Santana going on the DL, there will be blood.  New blood that is.  There will be a call-up to replace Johan, whether it’s Collin McHugh or Matt Harvey, and Batista’s spot was taken by Elvin Ramirez.

On to today’s game.  If the Mets ever needed a W, it’s today.  Jon Niese (7-4 3.58 ERA) will oppose Nathan Eovaldi (1-6 4.33).  Niese essentially must throw a complete game shutout for the Mets to win today.  The bullpen is so pathetic that Terry Collins used RA Dickey in relief yesterday.  And how did that work out?  A 2-run home run?  So not too good.  Niese has basically been the Mets best pitcher for going on 6 weeks.  The Mets lit up Eovaldi back in LA about 3 weeks go, so hopefully Niese will get some run support.

The game can be seen on WPIX and heard on WFAN 660 AM.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm.

Starting Lineups via

New York Mets

1) Ruben Tejada SS
2) Jordany Valdespin LF
3) David Wright 3B
4) Ike Davis 1B
5) Daniel Murphy 2B
6) Lucas Duda RF
7) Kirk Nieuwenhuis CF
8) Josh Thole C
9) Jon Niese LHP

Los Angeles Dodgers

1) Jerry Hairston Jr. LF
2) Mark Ellis 2B
3) Matt Kemp CF
4) Andre Ethier RF
5) Juan Rivera 1B
6) Luis Cruz SS
7) Juan Uribe 3B
8) A.J. Ellis C
9) Nathan Eovaldi RHP

Who’s HOT for the Mets…? Jordany Valdespin IS THE MAN RIGHT NOW!  In the month of July, Jordany is 10 for 19 with 4 HR, 8 RBI, and has6 runs scored.  It’s nice to see Terry Collins FINALLY get this kid in the starting lineup.

Who’s HOT for the Dodgers…?  Matt Kemp has picked up right where he left off before going on the DL.  He’s 7 for 22 with 2 HR and 6RBI.

Pitching Matchup

Jon Niese (7-4 3.58 ERA) will get the start for the Mets today.  Jon has gone at least 6 innings in his last 8 starts.  Last time out against the Nats, Jon was very  good.  In seven innings he allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out eight.  The last time he walked more than two batter in a start was all the way back at the end of May.  So you can expect him to pump stikes all day.  While Jon has been pitching very well, like most fans, I’d like to see him throw more curveballs and stop falling in love with the cutter.

Nathan Eovaldi (1-6 4.33) will oppose Niese today.   In Nathan’s start against the Mets earlier in the year, Ike Davis’s 3 run blast in the 6th inning was the final blow that capped off the Mets 5-1 victory.  Eovaldi was in the strike zone all night, so the Mets better come out swinging today and not fall into the ever popular 0-2 count.

Life Imitating Art: Mets Show Batista The Door

I wrote this after yesterday’s game in my recap: I nearly peed in my pants when the game started and Miguel Batista was greeted with an absolutely resounding outburst of boos before he even took threw the first pitch. I’m sorry, I felt terrible for Miguel, but the other part of me just couldn’t help laughing especially when the camera panned into the outfield where a huge...

Mets finally designate Miguel Batista for assignment

I know the Mets didn’t have many options when it came to spot starters but seeing them march Miguel Batista out there on Saturday was completely disheartening.  Sure enough, the the 41-year-old did exactly what one would expect him to do; not pitch well.  Batista was knocked around for 4 ER over 3 innings pitched to bring his ERA for the month of July to 8.32.  Like Manny Acosta...

Pre-Game: Dodgers (50-44) @ Mets (47-46)

Miguel Batista makes his fifth start of the season for the Mets in place of the injured Dillon Gee Coming off of a 7-6 loss last night the Mets try to stay above .500 with a win on Saturday against the Dodgers. The Mets send Miguel Batista to the hill looking to stop the string of loses the Mets have endured since the All Star Game. Batista is opposed by former Met Chris Capuano...

Post Game: Mets5 Dodgers 8

The Mets needed Batista to give some innings today and he was unable to do that. Today the Mets lost to the Dodgers by a score of 8 to 5. The Mets alarmingly fell back to exactly .500 on the season, at 47-47. Overall, the Mets have won only 1 game since returning from the All Star break. Miguel Batista started the game and struggled and only went 3 innings giving up 4 runs. It took...

Mets designate Miguel Batista for assignment

The New York Mets designated right handed pitcher Miguel Batista for assignment according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. Batista, 41, went 1-3 with a 4.82 ERA, 1.0 HR/9, 6.0 BB/9 and 6.6 SO/9 in 46.2 innings and 30 games, five starts with the Mets in 2012. Image by slgckgc under the Creative Commons License Agreement.

Elvin Ramirez to take Batista’s spot on roster

I remember watching Elvin Ramirez pitch earlier this season for the Mets against the Nationals and then again vs. the Yankees and thinking he just wasn’t quite ready for the moment.  In those two contests the 24-year-old gave up 5 ER on 6 hits and walked 7 batters in just 3 1/3 IP.  I felt like David Seville in the Chipmunks looking at my television and yelling ‘Elvvvviiiiinnnn’...

3 Up & 3 Down: The Sky Is Falling Edition

Extra, Extra, Grieve All About It! The Los Angeles Dodgers were in town this weekend, and they wound up sweeping the hapless Mets, and putting the good guys under .500 for the first time this season. It was an awful start to the homestand especially after a 1-5 road trip to start the second half. Oh and by the way, here came the Nationals. Without further ado, here are the 3 Ups...

Mets Swept By Dodgers in 12, Fall Under .500 For First Time This Season

Despite another great outing by Niese, and a valiant rally in the ninth, Ramon Ramirez let up five runs in the 12th and the offense failed to capatalize on multiple opportunities as the Mets dip under for .500 for the first time this season, falling to the Dodgers 8-3. Recap: Man do I hate writing about games like these. In the midst of this awful, AWFUL stretch to start the second...

We got a tough three games coming up, we got to pick ourselves up and get ready for them.”  ~  Terry Collins Despite another great outing by Niese, and a valiant rally in the ninth, Ramon Ramirez let up five runs in the 12th...
