Found April 18, 2012 on Mets Fever:
The New York Mets (7-4) will oppose the Atlanta Braves (6-5) this afternoon at 12:10 PM as they look to take the rubber match of a 3 game series that has seen a Jekyll and Hyde performance from their pitching staff.

Heading into yesterday evening's game, the Mets pitching staff boasted an ERA in the low 2s, an impressive number for a team that had pitching dubbed as a major vulnerability. However, following Johan Santana's shortest outing of his career and an unstable bullpen effort, the Mets were shut down 9-3 en route to their 4th loss of they year.

R.A Dickey (2-0, 2.08 ERA) will look to complete the series victory as he comes off two great starts to begin his campaign. Dickey has struggled against the Braves at home, pitching to the tune of a 4.98 ERA.

He'll be opposed by Jair Jurrjens (0-1, 7.71 ERA), who has looked anything like he did during his dominant first half in 2010. During his first start of the year against the Mets, Jurrjens couldn't quite find a rhythm and allowed 3 runs and 7 hits before being pulled after 4 1/3 innings.

Although Terry Collins announced yesterday that when Andres Torres returns he'll have his starting job secured, Kirk Nieuwenhuis has made that decision anything but easy and is looking to make a big impression today as he bats leadoff for the first time in his major league career. With Ruben Tejada receiving his first off day, Nieuwenhuis, who is batting .321 and getting on base at a .387 clip, will look to take advantage of a big opportunity after reaching base safely twice more yesterday.

New York Mets Starting Lineup:
1. Kirk Nieuwenhuis CF
2. Daniel Murphy 2B
3. David Wright 3B
4. Ike Davis 1B
5. Jason Bay RF
6. Lucas Duda LF
7.  Josh Thole C
8. Ronny Cedeno SS
9. R.A Dickey P

Post Game: Dickey Get Slammed, Mets Drop Rubber Match

Well, that's the reason games aren't played on paper.Coming off of Johan Santana's worst career outing, the New York Mets lost 14-6 to lose their second game in a row and drop the series to the Atlanta Braves.R.A...

Wet and sloppy Dickey

Mets 6 – Braves 14  The bad news is RA Dickey’s long run of 15 quality starts is over. Hopefully he can start another streak of 15 in his next outing. Dickey knuckled under to the Georgia rain and got trounced by the Atlanta Braves this afternoon. The Braves put up 14 runs by scoring 2 or more every inning but 2. The Mets offense tried to stay in the game but every time they got within

Dickey Gives Up 3 HR, Mets Lose to Braves 14-6

In a steady rain, R.A. Dickey had a poor outing, the bullpen struggled and the Mets lost the rubber game of the series, 14-6 Recap R.A. Dickey came out today and looked stellar in the first inning, but after that, the knuckleball went north and his results went south. Post Game: Braves 14 Mets 6

The Mets were defeated by the Braves 14-6 in today’s afternoon finale. RA Dickey fell apart today, giving up 3 home runs and a total of 8 earned runs. Dickey had a lot of movement on his knuckle ball in the first inning, but after that the ball floated and  the Braves’ hitters drove the ball out of the ballpark three times. Dickey was followed by Batista, Parnell, Byrdak, Rauch...

Braves Bring the Bats, Hammer Mets Who Fall to .500 on Road Trip

This afternoon the Mets (7-5) fell to the Atlanta Braves (7-5) by the final score of 14-6. After looking un-hittable in the first inning, R.A. Dickey got smacked around by the Braves’ hitters giving up three 2-run homers, and 8 runs in 4 1/3 innings of work. There’s really nothing else to say about today’s game other than the Braves hit the snot out of the ball and the Mets...

Dickey Comes Undone as Mets Drop Another in Atlanta

The second time through the rotation this season, Mets starting pitchers allowed just four earned runs in 31 and 2/3 innings. The third time through isn’t going as well. For the second straight day a Mets starter was rocked, pitching less than five innings and allowing more than five runs. After a dreadful start by Johan Santana on Tuesday night it was R.A. Dickey’s turn on Wednesday...

R.A. Dickey’s Streak Ends, Looking Back at Doc’s

The Braves ended R.A. Dickey’s streak of 14-consecutive quality starts that fell just short of Dwight Gooden’s team record set in 1985. Ironically, it was the Braves that ended Doc’s on July 4th of that season. That was the infamous 19 inning game that ended at 4:00 AM. Dickey’s streak has been over two seasons, as it started on July 25th against Cincinnati. For as impressive...

A Not-So-Brief Discussion On No-Hitters And The Mets

When R.A. Dickey gave up a second-inning double to the Braves’ Freddie Freeman during Wednesday’s rubber match with Atlanta, it marked the 7,980th consecutive game that a Mets pitcher has failed to pitch a no-hitter.  How many games have the Mets played in their half century of existence?  7,980. Barring any rainouts or (heaven forbid) an actual no-hitter in the next 20 games...

Mets need strikeout-averse Pelf to go deeper into games

The starting pitching of our Metropolitan baseball club has been sublime so far this season. Johan Santana, R.A. Dickey and Jon Niese have been on top of their games and been able to keep the Mets competitive despite an inconsistent first week of offense. However, the job of a pitching rotation isn’t just a matter of quality, but quanitity as well. The more innings the starters...

For Starters, And Relievers

If there was any doubt that it all starts with pitching, especially starting pitching, then look back at the last two games. First Johan Santana tanked. Today, R.A. Dickey gives up eight runs in four and a third to send the Mets to their second straight loss. It's a shame to bang out fourteen hits, score six and lose. But when your starter can't come up with a quality start...

Braves 14, Mets 6

Dan Uggla ended his struggles against against R.A. Dickey with a two-run homer, and Juan Francisco and Freddie Freeman also hit two-run drives to lead the Atlanta Braves over the New York Mets 14-6 Wednesday.
