A busy day in a dreadful Phillies season finds them shipping Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence out of town. Both moves were very necessary and look for more in the next month as the waiver trade deadline approaches. My brief editorial is the return for Victorino and Pence is worthy of them. I was among the few that felt the haul to land Pence in the first place was ridiculous and today kind of proves that. At the end of the day, he was not worth the prospects and certainly not worth the dollars. It's important to take time and remember the good times with Shane Victorino.  I was ready to move on from him but he had a fantastic run in Philly. From Rule 5 bust to Gold Glover, All Star, and World Series Champion. His slam of Sabathia in the '08 NLDS is one of my favorite Phillies moments. His work in the community with the Boys and Girls Club was amazing and while he got under my skin a bit this season, when all is said and done, the beer is on me if I run into him at a local...

Victorinos thank Phillies fans with ad

Shane Victorino may have driven some of us crazy time to time with his play, but the man is a true class act. He took out this full-page ad in tomorrow's Philadelphia Daily News. I'm shocked he got this out so fast. Bob Ventrone, Jr. shared the picture on his Facebook page that I noticed thanks to Phillies Beat Writer Kevin Cooney on Twitter. Speaking of Twitter, Shane...

Odds the Phillies Trade Cliff Lee to the Rangers? "Less than One Percent" or 25%. Pick oneC

T.R. Sullivan, who broke the story when the Phillies signed Cliff Lee prior to last season, believes there is a "less than one percent chance" that the Rangers and Phillies make a deal, though they have talked: The latest word on Cliff Lee is that the Phillies are willing to talk about him. Don’t look for him to be traded to Texas. An industry source said the chances...

Philadelphia Phillies deal Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino

The Philadelphia Phillies have begun the retooling process. It could hardly be called a rebuilding process following the six year, 144 million dollar extension they gave to Cole Hamels. For the time being, the Phillies have more than 90 million committed to their top three pitchers and Ryan Howard. The extension began wide speculation that the Phillies would begin to...

O'Donnell was right after all, Pence to Giants

A couple nights ago, Dennis O'Donnell of KPIX twittered about that the Giants "have acquired Hunter Pence". It started a wildfire of retweets (re-posts for you old people not on Twitter), by everyone and their mother, including Andy Baggarly of CSN.  With fans going nuts over this apparent news, KPIX ran the story even after Baggarly had confirmed with Bobby...

What did Phillies get back in Victorino and Pence deals?

What a difference a year makes.  On this date one year ago the Phillies brought in Hunter Pence in a hugely popular trade - remember the cameras following his arrival in that black SUV?  It bolstered a team who was 29 games above .500 and held a 6 game lead in the NL East on their way to 102 victories. Exactly one year later, the 12 games under .500 last place...

Look out! Henry Rodriguez scares the crap out of a guy behind home plate with pitch to the backstop

Incoming! There's SMH-Rod scaring the crap out of a guy sitting behind home plate with a 97 MPH fastball to the screen last night. 6-0 game, no pressure...an inning and a third, 2 hits, 2 walks later, an 8-0 game. So much for Davey saving his bullpen. In his postgame presser, Davey Johnson credits that pitch with helping to get dominant Cliff Lee out of the game: ...

Phillies throw up white flag for 2012, expected, but still surprising

Say goodbye to 2012. Atlanta did that with a sweep of the Phillies this past weekend, and what dagger the Braves did, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro twisted inside the belly of Phillies fans. OK, gone are Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino. Coming in are outfielder Nate Schierholtz and minor-league prospects Tommy Joseph, a catcher, and Seth Rosin, a righthanded pitcher (from the Giants for...

Nats Top Sports Illustrated Power Rankings

(Screenshot via SI.com) The Washington Nationals top this week's Sports Illustrated Power Rankings for the first time this season, overtaking the Texas Rangers for the top spot. It shouldn't surprise anyone that this season's Nats team are in this position, but it doesn't make it any less exciting. With August on the horizon, it certainly appears that the Nats are...
