It's going to be culture shock for the White Sox beat writers this spring, as the team downshifts from Ozzie Guillen's spice rack to Robin Ventura's vanilla personality. Ventura's dialect will be a lot easier to understand, but he's unlikely to fill up the notebooks the way Guillen did over the last eight seasons. Ozzie probably came out of the womb with sound bytes ready to go. Other than one ill-fated mound visit with Nolan Ryan, Ventura's pro career never invited controversy. Ventura is a curious hire for the big chair because he has absolutely no experience whatsoever; he hasn't been a manager or a coach at any level. But perhaps his even personality will be just what the club needs to fly right (and to hit right); no offense crushed fantasy dreams like the White Sox in 2011. The White Sox finished with just 654 runs, their lowest full-season total since 1988, and there were underachievers all over the lineup. Adam Dunn, Alex Rios, Gordon Beckham. … ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOO! Ozzie Guillen Turns 48 Today

Ballertainment If you know The Lady GM, you know I am a HUGE fan of Miami Marlin’s skipper Ozzie Guillen. I’m still in mourning over his ousting from my beloved White Sox, but my adoration for him lives strong. He has been my boo since his South Side playing days in a Chicago White Sox uniform (I used to go to the ball park for $1 on Ladies Day), and years later when he became...

Chicago White Sox’ Dayan Viciedo will need to show worth

Although relatively new to the team, it seems like Dayan Viciedo has been part of the White Sox family for some time. Since the White Sox traded previous right fielder Carlos Quentin a few weeks ago, the 22 year-old Viciedo has basically secured the position in right. The young player came up to the majors on August 28th of the 2011 season and the fact that he didn’t arrive sooner...

Quick Hits: Motte, Cespedes, Garcia, Angels

On this date last year, the White Sox selected Philip Humber off of waivers from the Athletics. The right-hander posted a 3.75 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 163 innings in 2011 and projects to start for Chicago in 2012. We didn't see anyone claimed on waivers today, but we do have these links... A multiyear deal between the Cardinals and Jason Motte is ‘in play,...

Video: Miami Marlins target Yoenis Cespedes hits first winter league homer

Does this mean Yoenis Cespedes’ price is back up? Off to a slow start in the Dominican winter league, Cespedes on Wednesday showed what all the fuss is about. He cracked a long home run to left field in the Aguilas’ 7-1 win over the Gigantes. Rhiner Cruz’s full count fastball registered at 97 mph. It was up and over the plate, and Cespedes crushed it. Cespedes still is just...
