The rubber match falls on Phil Hughes (3-6, 5.09 ERA) in the afternoon game against Derek Holland (5-4, 3.43 ERA) and the Rangers. Hughes is on extended rest, coming off seven days since his previous start, against the Dodgers. He struggled in that outing, allowing five runs on 10 hits over six innings in the 6-0 loss. In four career appearances (three starts) against Texas, Hughes is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA. Over his last four starts, Holland is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA. He has made seven starts and one relief appearance against the Yankees in the regular season over his career and is 0-5 with an 8.85 ERA. However, he did beat them in relief during the 2010 ALCS. ”I know New York has been pretty tough, but my job is not to worry about that,” Holland said. “I need to turn the page and make something else happen.”   Notes on the game. Mark Teixeira will have season ending wrist surgery. He is expecting to be healthy in about six months. Ichiro Suzuki is batting .373 with three homers and seven RBIs over his last 13 games.   Game kicks off at 1:05 PM (EST) on Yes

The planets have lined up: Today, the Yankees pitch Phil Hughes - maybe for the last time - and Toronto sends the Yankee Yin-Yang - Chien-Ming Wang - against Boston

The Mayans only missed by six months.Today, the universe is poised for a Yankee juju kill-shot:  Phil Hughes and Chien-Ming Wang both start for their respective teams.Hughes has been an ultimate disappointment - so disappointing that the Yankees can't even get anything of equal disappointment value in a trade. So disappointing that if he throws a shutout, it will be disappointing...

Is Phil Hughes a Future Met?

The New York Yankees are likely set to bid adieu to free agent-to-be Phil Hughes. The 27-year-old right hander has spent his entire professional career with the Yankees organization, but his peripherals aren’t conducive to a longer stay in the Bronx. Whether or not the Yankees will make him an offer seems almost a non-factor.  The team is aging, it doesn’t have a lot of financial...

The Real Reason Rangers Pitcher Derek Holland Was Kicked Out of Concert

Recently it made the internet news cycle that Texas Rangers starting pitcher was kicked out of a Counting Crows concert in New Jersey for what he portrayed as no apparent reason. According to Holland he didn't do anything. He just wanted to stand up and take pictures. Even the most die-hard of Rangers fan has to wonder about that one, and if you believe this eye-witness account...

Derek Holland Tosses a Two Hit CG/SO

Derek Holland was spectacular as he allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. The Yankees were not able to register an extra base hit against Holland and registered only two at-bats with runners in scoring position. Mike Trout continued to crush the Tigers, going 4/5 with a double and run. Patrick Corbin remains 9-0 after suffering another no decision.  Corbin...

Holland, Grimm go Dumb and Dumber

Texas pitcher Derek Holland has become a favorite of the MLB Fan Cave. Last year when the Rangers made the trip to New York, Holland and then teammate Ryan Dempster did Harry Caray impersonations at the Fan Cave. Holland made a return trip with the Rangers in New York, taking a new bit and a new teammate with him. Holland and Justin Grimm donned outfits from "Dumb and Dumber...

Holland, Rangers blank Yanks

As the outs piled up, the little voice in Derek Holland's head kept getting louder. ''You can execute this pitch! You can throw it!'' the Texas left-hander told himself, over and over. ''You're going to make this pitch!'' He certainly did. Holland tamed a team that often tagged him, tossing a two-hitter as the Rangers finished up an impressive...

Holland throws third career complete game shutout

Engel Beltre had his first major league hit today, and Jurickson Profar had a pretty home run.  But they weren’t the stars of the day.  How about a standing ovation for Derek Holland? He went all nine innings, giving up just two hits and two walks.  He struck out seven.  And he only needed 92 pitches to finish his day.  The Rangers fans on my timeline were calling that a Maddux...

Joe Girardi Literally Throws in Towel After Yankees’ Shutout Loss to Rangers (GIF)

It’s been a frustrating month for the New York Yankees. The Yankees have played two games under .500 in June, and likewise the team’s offensive stats have fallen to 26th in baseball in batting average, 24th in on-base percentage and 24th in slugging percentage. On Thursday, it was the Rangers’ Derek Holland‘s turn to stymie New York, throwing a two-hitter and allowing just...
