In the Washington Nationals pursuit for their first winning season, there has been one constant that has plagued the team throughout their six years as a franchise. That constant has been major injuries. From Nick Johnson’s fragile body to Ryan Zimmerman’s DL stints, the team has seen its fair share of season altering injuries. Most recently though in the last three years, it has been the Nationals’ top starting pitchers that have felt the pain with very similar UCL tears that led to Tommy John surgery. It all began in 2009, with the Nationals’ No. 2 pitcher, Jordan Zimmermann. Two months into his impressive rookie debut in the majors, Zimmermann was placed on the disabled list with elbow pain that affected his throwing arm. By his first rehab start in the minors, nothing had changed and he was diagnosed with a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery. One year later, the No. 1 prospect in all baseball, Stephen Strasburg, made his highly anticipated debut in Washington. Alm...

Strasburg to have innings limited

The Nationals' 2009 No. 1 pick is expected to be fully healthy this season after missing almost of 2011 following Tommy John surgery, but reports suggest he'll be limited to 150-160 innings this year.

Video of the Stephen Strasburg jersey retirement ceremony, etc.

On Friday night, Stephen Strasburg had his number retired by SDSU. Here's video of the ceremony, above, via goaztecs.com. On Sunday, Stephen Strasburg arrived for Spring Training with the Nationals, apparently relaxed and happy to be "just another donkey", with a smile on his face and a clear mind: "My mind is a lot clearer. I just go out there and throw...

Nationals to go easy on Strasburg

Stephen Strasburg will follow the same path as Washington Nationals teammate Jordan Zimmermann in his comeback from elbow-ligament replacement surgery. Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Monday that Strasburg will be limited to 150-160 innings this season. Zimmermann threw 161 1/3 innings last year following surgery and hopes to reach 200 this season. The 23-year-old Strasburg...

Nationals won't have Strasburg skip starts

Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo says Stephen Strasburg's innings limit won't cause the pitcher to skip starts this season. The 23-year-old missed most of last season while recovering from elbow-ligament replacement surgery. He returned for five starts in September. Rizzo says: ''There's not going to be a whole lot of tinkering going on. We'...

Ryan Zimmerman Willing To Move To 1B, But Not Yet

To me, Washington Post beat reporter Adam Kilgore is at the absolute top of his game in spring training. It's clear that he spends the entire offseason thinking of perfect potential February stories, and he wastes no time cutting through the fat. Yesterday, he asked Ryan Zimmerman about potentially, someday, having to change positions after the Nationals drafted third baseman...

Where will Stephen Strasburg be 5 years from now?

Where oh where will Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg be five years from now? Shagging fly balls in some desolate minor league/rehab field? NL Cy Young award winner? Only time will tell, although I’m hoping its the latter of the two. Strasburg age 24, is definitely the highest touted pitcher in MLB history, and he actually

Nats right-hander Stephen Strasburg arrived at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday and said that he doesn't want to be given any special treatment. He wants to be the guy the team can rely on every fifth day.

Davey Says Nats Have More Gifted Athletes Than 83-84 Mets

This, from Adam Rubin: Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson was asked whether the current Nationals team, with young stars such as Stephen Strasburg, reminds him of the 1983-84 Mets, who were a couple of years away from winning a World Series. “This club has more potential than that club,” Johnson replied Monday at Nationals camp in Viera. “It just has...

Strasburg anticipates season free of doubts

VIERA, Fla. — His first year, Stephen Strasburg was the phenom. The guy with the golden arm. The biggest question was whether the Nationals would allow their prized pitcher to skip the minor leagues. The second year, he was a spectator. The road back from Tommy John ligament reconstruction surgery ...

Pitcher, doctor change baseball forever

The trajectory of the 2012 Major League Baseball season -- when big-name pitchers like Stephen Strasburg, Adam Wainwright and Joba Chamberlain are continuing comebacks from major elbow surgery -- could well have been determined one July evening at Chavez Ravine nearly 40 years ago, when a Los Angeles Dodgers ace lefty reared back, fired a sinker and felt his left arm go dead. At...

Nats not going to tinker with rotation

Even though Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg is on an innings limit this season, the Nationals are not planning to use a six-man rotation or even think about having Strasburg start the season a month later. Strasburg is slated to pitch 160 innings in 2012.
