Mets right-hander Jenrry Mejia (1-0 2.45) stepped in to make a rehab start Monday night in St. Lucie’s game against the Bradenton Marauders. It was Mejia’s second rehab start in his attempt to come back from last year’s Tommy John Surgery. In his first game on May 9th against Brevard County, Mejia went five innings giving up two earned runs on four hits and two walks, with one strikeout. In his start tonight Mejia went the first six innings while giving up just one run on three hits with no walks, and seven strikeouts. The one run he gave up was a solo home run to ex-Met farmhand Stef Welch. After Mejia pitched, St. Lucie went on to win the game with three innings of lock-down relief by righty Johan Almonte. The 4-1 victory was the first W for Mejia since April 13th, 2011. When I spoke with Wally Backman at the end of April, I asked him if he was going to get Mejia there with the Bisons, once the young righty is deemed healthy and ready to go. Wally said simply, “we’ll get him.” We...

David Wright Should Retire as a Met

As the Mets try to recuperate from their second ninth inning meltdown in the last three days, Monday morning started out with a dose of good news — the Mets are preparing a formal offer to retain David Wright. Whether you want to or not, it’s very easy to think about how the whole Jose Reyes situation panned out when thinking about Wright’s future in the orange and blue, but...

Terry Collins pulls David Wright and what ensued was AWESOME

The New York Mets caught a good ol’ fashion butt kicking at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, but all of that was just a footnote to what occurred during the seventh inning.  Following a solo blast by Rickie Weeks, Mets reliever DJ Carrasco drilled Brewers slugger and last years NL MVP on the next pitch with a “sinker” in the upper part of his left shoulder...

How lucky have the Mets been?

To be clear, I mean that as an actual question, not a rhetorical one. It’s a question with lots of reasonable, subjective answers. The Mets have been lucky, because David Wright has rediscovered his stardom, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis has unexpectedly settled right into the Major League lineup, and Johan Santana‘s left arm is not only still attached to his body seven starts into...

Mets Readying A Long Term Deal For David Wright

According to Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal, the Mets are quietly preparing to offer third baseman David Wright a long-term contract extension. Costa spoke to someone with knowledge of the situation who told him the Mets could get an offer ready as soon as this summer. As you may know already, the Mets hold a $16 million option on Wright for 2013, so technically there...

Déjà Vu All Over Again: Mets Rally, Bullpen Blows It, Fall 8-4

Recap: Despite a valiant effort by Jon Niese and the New York Mets, who have scratched and clawed for every win this year, the bullpen for the second time this series could not hold it together, dropping the rubber game on a walk-off grand slam by Mike Giancarlo Stanton, 8-4. Niese took the hill despite not feeling his best and handed the Amazin’s goose eggs over six frames before...

Unlikely Heroes as the Mets Pitch and Squeeze Their Way to a “W”

Tonight the Mets got excellent performances from Miguel Batista, Daniel Murphy and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt from Ronny Cedeno to lead the team to a 3-1 win in the first of two against the Brewers.  Also note-worthy, is that Frank Francisco was able to record his 9th save of the season, although it wasn’t easy. Let’s focus on the great tonight first, and that starts...

The Binghamton Buzz: B-Mets Bats Come Alive

Ramblings from Henry and Fayette Streets   The Week That Was: May 8th – May 13th The Binghamton Mets played .500 baseball over the past week, losing a rain shortened series at home against the New Britain Rock Cats two games to none, while taking the series in New Hampshire over the weekend winning three of four. The eleven runs the B-Mets scored in the game on Friday night in...

Morning Grind: Why The Negativity Towards Wright?

I have noticed a theme both here and across the entire Mets fanbase of an increasing percentage of people who look at David Wright in a bad light. They put him down no matter how well he is performing and are the first to jump on him when he makes an error or strikes out in a key spot; and that’s just not right. If you are a true fan of your team, you should root FOR the longest...

Mets Closer Frank Francisco goes off on umpire

New York Mets closer Frank Francisco has blown a lot of games this season but yesterday he blew his top and it may have cost him his job. Francisco didn't even retire a batter in the top of the ninth against the Miami Marlins before he was pulled from the game, walked towards home plate and started to unload a barrage of expletives at home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. With the...

Report: Mets preparing long-term offer for Wright

The New York Mets are preparing to make a long-term offer to keep David Wright in Queens, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal that cited "a baseball official briefed on the team's thinking." Wright, 29, is leading the National League with a .400 batting average and a .489 on-base percentage, and is third in the NL with a 1.080 OPS. The Mets have a $16...

Francisco saves Mets' victory despite boos

NEW YORK -- Frank Francisco heard the boos in the ninth inning at Citi Field on Monday, as he threatened to blow his second straight save. Earlier, the New York Mets had used a suicide squeeze play, an error and an RBI single to build a three-run lead while starter Miguel Batista and a pair of relievers shut out the Milwaukee Brewers for the first eight innings. Now, a few hours...

Marlins 8, Mets 4

Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-out grand slam to cap a ninth-inning rally by the Miami Marlins, who beat an angry Frank Francisco and the New York Mets 8-4 Sunday. The walk-off victory was the second in the three-game series for the Marlins, who have won 10 of their past 12 games. The Marlins trailed 4-2 when Emilio Bonifacio led off the ninth with his second triple of the game against...
