AAA: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS Box Score Result: Indianapolis 7, Toledo 2 Starting Pitcher: Gerrit Cole, RHP (0-0, 6.00) – 2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR Top Hitter: Brett Carroll, RF (.368) – 3-for-4, 2 RBI Other Notable Performers Vic Black, RHP (5.06) – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR Game Notes: Gerrit Cole was bounced from his second start of the season due to an elevated pitch count. Cole threw 63 pitches in two innings, with 42 strikes. He left his last outing after four innings, leaving early due to a high pitch count in the fourth frame. In either case, he’s not helping people who are arguing that he should be in the majors today. There shouldn’t be any long-term worries about Cole. He’s only made four starts at the Triple-A level. But this shows that he shouldn’t just skip over the level and go right to the majors. Vic Black has looked good this season, outside of the second inning of his first appearance. Black dominated in his first inning of his first outing, getting three strikeouts. He gave up three runs in the second inning, getting just one out. Since then he’s pitched four shutout innings, allowing two walks and two hits, including today’s game.   AA: ALTOONA CURVE  Altoona was postponed due to rain.   A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS Box Score Result: Charlotte 4, Bradenton 3 Starting Pitcher: Robby Rowland, RHP (4.50) – 3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Gregory Polanco, CF (.273) – 1-for-4, 2B, SB, BB Other Notable Performers: Jhonathan Ramos, LHP (0.00) – 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0 HR Taylor Lewis, LF (.300) – 1-for-4, 2B, BB Game Notes: Bradenton got off to a 3-2 lead after three innings, then faced an hour rain delay, which knocked Robby Rowland out of the game. Jhonathan Ramos came on to pitch four shutout innings in relief. Zach Thornton gave up the game tying run in the bottom of the ninth, and Quinton Miller gave up the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Gregory Polanco has a stolen base in four of his six games this year.   A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER Box Score Result: Charleston 12, West Virginia 5 Starting Pitcher: Clay Holmes, RHP (4.15) – 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 0 HR Top Hitter:  Josh Bell, RF (.231) – 2-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI Other Notable Performers Stetson Allie, DH (.333) – 1-for-4, 2B Game Notes: Josh Bell hit his first home run of the 2013 season, and his second home run as a pro. Stetson Allie recorded a hit for the fifth game in a row. He now has ten hits in 30 at-bats, but also has 10 strikeouts after adding another one today. On the bright side, he has two doubles and two homers, showing his raw power. Clay Holmes had a good start, only giving up two hits in five shutout innings. He did struggle with his control, giving up four walks. Control was a problem for Holmes last year, and he’s not off to a good start this year with eight walks in 8.2 innings. David Jagoditsh gave up five runs, four earned, in 1.1 innings. Jason Creasy allowed three of those runs to score, then gave up six runs, four earned, without recording an out. Creasy had given up just one run in 5.2 innings prior to this outing.

First Pitch: The Minors Exist For a Reason

Gerrit Cole There’s one thing you notice when you cover prospects closely: there’s no middle ground with expectations and reactions. At times it seems like there are pretty much only two reactions to a prospect. If there is a good report, or a player is performing well, there are calls for a promotion. If the player has a flaw, or is going through some struggles, the reaction...

Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 Extended Spring Training Roster

Spring Training is over for the full season teams, but for players who will start the year in Jamestown, the Gulf Coast League, or the Dominican Summer League, there’s extended Spring Training. Extended Spring Training works similar to regular Spring Training in minor league camp. The team works out in the morning, then plays games in the afternoon against the Phillies, Blue Jays...

Charlie Morton and Francisco Liriano Hoping to Return in May

Charlie Morton and Francisco Liriano both threw at Pirate City this afternoon. Morton threw a 35-40 pitch bullpen session, which came two days after he threw two innings in an extended Spring Training game. Liriano threw two innings of a simulated game, throwing about 30 pitches total. I spoke with both pitchers after their work today to discuss how they were feeling physically,...

Sadler, Cunningham lead Curve to victory in home opener

The Altoona Curve defeated the Harrisburg Senators 5-4 in their first home game of the year. Starting pitcher Casey Sadler was solid in the victory, going six innings and surrendering three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two. Offensively, the Curve were led by second baseman Jarek Cunningham who went 3-for 4, including a two-run homer in the third inning. Gift Ngoepe...

Pittsburgh Pirates Start to the Season

Starling Marte has been the Pirates best offensive threat through the seasons first nine games. The Pittsburgh Pirates have gotten off to a 3-6 start in their first nine games of the season but their record does not indicate how well they COULD be if everything was clicking to this point. Let’s begin with the offense: The Pirates have had a very poor start to the season with...

PHOENIX (AP) -- Garrett Jones had three hits and two RBIs, Starling Marte drove in two runs and scored twice, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 Tuesday night for their first winning streak of the season. Game 9 Preview: Pirates at Diamondbacks

Pirates (3-5) at D-Backs (5-3) 3:40 PM–Chase Field, Phoenix MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Bring out the brooms! The Bucs go for the sweep in today’s afternoon game out in Phoenix. This would obviously be a great way to recover from the rough Dodgers series and would build some momentum going in to a weekend home series against the Reds. It would be especially great if the offense...

Bucs’ Bats Finally Show Signs of Life in Win at Arizona

It took more than a week, but the Pittsburgh Pirates finally showed something resembling consistency on offense in the Bucs’ 6-5 win on Wednesday against Arizona at Chase Field. Starling Marte had two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth, in the Pirates 6-5 win at Arizona. Pirates 6, Diamondbacks 5

Game 8: Pirates 6 Diamondbacks 5

More than anything, this was a James McDonald Game. McDonald had a 1-0 lead when he took the mound in the first inning. He walked two of the first three hitters, then gave up a double, then a home run. It looked like the Pirates were going to be stuck with J-Mac at his worst. Instead, McDonald set down nine of the ten hitters he faced in the second, third, and fourth innings, only...

Melancon finds home in Bucs bullpen

After posting a 2.78 ERA over 71 appearances for the Astros in 2011, Mark Melancon did not adjust well to the American League last season. He was traded to the Red Sox in the offseason and recorded a 6.20 ERA in 41 appearances. The right-hander came to Pittsburgh in the Joel Hanrahan deal and told PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko that he feels comfortable in the Bucs bullpen.

The Pirates have the #9 and #14 picks in the upcoming June amateur draft. Throughout the college...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 8

Sometimes life can be challenging.  For example, I’ve spent basically the entirety of the past two days either in a hotel lobby, on a roof, snaking pipes, or shopping for a new toilet. That’s not to complain, adversity is what makes life great.  Hopefully the Pirates have learned that lesson and this response is real. A series…
