First Pitch: MLB’s Draft Lottery System Doesn’t Achieve Its Goal

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended up with a good result in today’s Competitive Balance Lottery. They got the second pick in Compensation Round A, which right now gives them the 33rd pick in the draft. The draft worked out well, but it could have very easily gone a different way. Like a lot of changes made by baseball, the lottery made no sense. The purpose of the lottery was to award...

Andrew McCutchen’s 56-game run among baseball’s best ever?

While the wiry Pittsburgh centerfielder with dreadlocks continues his march toward his first MVP, does the season he has put together rank among...

Andrew McCutchen In Midst of Historic Breakout Season

As we approach the latter stages of the MLB regular season, individual players’ statistics start to take shape and we can begin really gauging what type of campaign they are putting together. I did this yesterday when analyzing the top 8 current contenders for NL MVP. The man who came out #1 on that list also happens to be the hottest player in all of baseball. And he just so...

Minor League Schedule: 7/19/12

Tonight’s probables features five pitchers that were listed among our top 23 prospects to start the season, including the players in the top two spots, Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole. West Virginia was off yesterday. They resume their schedule tonight, beginning a four game series at home. Bradenton’s game last night was suspended in the sixth inning with the score tied, due...

Marlins try to bounce back behind Zambrano

While arguably no one's been hotter than Andrew McCutchen of late, the Pittsburgh Pirates' Neil Walker and Pedro Alvarez are also becoming of some well-deserved acclaim. Winner of 14 of 19, Pittsburgh looks to keep things going Saturday night in the second of three games with the visiting Miami Marlins. Sitting one-half game behind Cincinnati in the NL Central, Pittsburgh...

Pirates 4, Marlins 3

Pedro Alvarez hit his 20th homer of the season, Andrew McCutchen had two hits to boost his batting average to a major-league best .372 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday night. Kevin Correia (7-6) overcame a shaky start to win his fifth consecutive decision. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one-out jam for 27th save as the Pirates moved to a season...

Pirates 9, Rockies 6

Garrett Jones had three hits, including one of Pittsburgh's four home runs, Pedro Alvarez also homered and the Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 9-6 on Wednesday. James McDonald struggled through five tough innings, and Rod Barajas and Casey McGehee also went deep for the Pirates, who took two of three from the Rockies. Dexter Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez homered, and Andrew...

McKenry has been solid behind the plate

With the second half of the season under way, the Pirates are keeping a close eye on Rod Barajas’ playing time. That means Michael McKenry will see more playing time. McKenry has hit safely in 10 of his last 14 games, going 17-for-44 (.386) with 5 doubles, 4 HR and 13 RBI. He is batting .255 with 7 home runs and 19 RBI.'s George Von Benko spoke with McKenry recently.

Marlins get fast start but fall behind in loss

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pedro Alvarez hit his 20th homer of the season, Andrew McCutchen had two hits to boost his batting average to a major-league best .372 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday night. Kevin Correia (7-6) overcame a shaky start to win his fifth consecutive decision. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one-out jam for 27th save as the Pirates...

Friday night fireworks

The Pirates pulled off yet another comeback victory in front of yet another great crowd on Friday night, opening this weekend’s series in style with a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Kevin Correia turned in a pretty typical outing. He was hit hard early on (two runs in the first, including a Jose Reyes leadoff bomb) and it seemed like he’d be in some serious trouble, but then...

Marlins-Pirates Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates were pleased with how they closed out their road trip. A six-game homestand provides the opportunity to continue the momentum. The Pirates begin a three-game set against the Miami Marlins on Friday night. After losing two of three at Milwaukee coming out of the All-Star break, Pittsburgh (51-40) rebounded to win the final two games of its series at Colorado...

A welcome-home win

It’s good to be back.  A special thanks to the Pittsburgh Pirates for welcoming me home with a win.  And thanks to Mike Grosso for keeping me updated while I was gone.  My favorite pitcher pitched well enough to get the win, and our never-say-die offense gave Kevin Correia just enough run support, highlighted by [...]
