SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Comparing Diamondbacks closer J.J. Putz's 2011 spring training experience and to his 2012 experience might be a bit like comparing apples to oranges.
Though Putz overcame an injury-filled spring in 2011 to have one of his best seasons, the closer is having a markedly different spring this year that could bode well in his second season with the D-backs.
"I was hurt this time last year, so obviously I feel better than that," Putz said. "It's been nice being able to throw six innings this spring, being able to work on the pitches I wanted to work on and just get the work in."
Putz has so far pitched four of those scheduled six innings, doubling the number of appearances he made last season. He's allowed two runs, both on solo homers, and three hits. He's scheduled to make back-to-back outings Friday and Saturday, his final outings until the start of the regular season.
Simply being healthy enough to participate from the start...

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson on Monday seemed to suggest the situation at third base might not be as clear cut as it appeared when asked if Ryan Roberts and Geoff Blum might share time there, but Gibson's comments Tuesday cleared things up.
"Ryan Roberts is my third baseman," Gibson said when asked if the situation at third base might be fluid...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Rookie left-hander Patrick Corbin has the most innings and the lowest ERA among the remaining pitchers in the Diamondbacks camp, opening eyes.
But with the rotation set, Corbin appears all but certain to open the season as a starter in a minor league rotation instead of in the major league bullpen. It is the path Josh Collmenter took last spring, and that did...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Miguel Montero may have priced himself out of the Diamondbacks future.
A first-time All-Star last year, Montero was seeking a multi-year contract worth about 12 million-13 million a year before the sides broke off negotiations this spring, a source with knowledge of the talks said Thursday.
The D-backs, who broke their budget to sign free agents Jason Kubel...
As part of our preview for the upcoming 2012 season, we’ll be doing a 10 Bold Predictions for 2012 series that will be featured between now and Opening Day. Our sixth prediction is that Justin Upton and the Arizona Diamondbacks are in for a long 2012 campaign.
Justin Upton was unbelievable last season. If it weren’t for J-Up and his motley crew that made up the rest of the band...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. The Diamondbacks played through another gorgeous spring Thursday sunbathers blanketing the berm at sold out Salt River Fields, a top pitching prospect on the mound, the only questions coming from the other dugout.
It was another uneventful day in what has been an uneventful spring for the defending NL West champion, just the way they would have drawn it up.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Diamondbacks' game against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday provided a perfect "only-in-spring-training" moment when D-backs starter Patrick Corbin was removed from the game after throwing five hitless innings. The outing was just the latest and most impressive performance from the 22-year-old left-hander.
While he has flown under the radar...
It's been a year since the Fiesta Bowl scandal embarrassed legislators, but at least some Arizona lawmakers still like their freebies.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have offered free tickets to legislators for the baseball team's first game of the season, and a team executive says at least 40 of the 90 state senators and representatives have accepted so far.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Patrick Corbin has pitched extremely well this spring, and it probably won't be enough to make Arizona's opening-day roster.
Corbin tossed five hitless innings to lift the Diamondbacks to a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
The left-hander struck out three and walked two while lowering his spring ERA to 0.57.

Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin threw five no-hit innings and the Diamondbacks earned a 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Corbin walked two and struck out three. The left hander picked up his first win and lowered his ERA this spring to 0.57.
Corbin also went 2 for 2 with a triple and a RBI.
Geraldo Parra added two hits, including a triple for Arizona.
The Arizona Diamondbacks were the biggest surprise division winner in baseball last season. From April to October they established themselves as a complete team, with a lineup that can hit, base runners that can steal, a rotation that can win, and a bullpen that can close. This led to a 94-68 record, eight games ahead of the previous
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Miguel Montero is showing the Arizona Diamondbacks why they should give him a long-term deal.
Montero hit a three-run home run to carry the Diamondbacks to a 5-4 victory over a Cleveland Indians split squad on Thursday.
Montero and the Diamondbacks could not agree on an extension in the offseason so the 28-year-old will be a free agent after the season...
The Yankees have claimed catcher Craig Tatum off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 29-year-old catcher has been claimed off waivers three times in the last few months, first by the Astros, then by the Diamondbacks, and now by the Yankees. Tatum has a .223/.291/.264 line with one home run in 299 MLB plate appearances. [...]
