Carlos Quentin was clearly the Padres' biggest injury loss during spring training. But the Padres lost another player to surgery at the start of the exhibition season. And while Logan Forsythe's name didn't carry the cache of Quentin's, he was still a huge loss. The Padres figured Forsythe would open the season as their top bat in the middle infield and possibly unseat Orlando Hudson at second. Forsythe, however, had surgery March 9 to remove a fractured sesamoid bone from the ball of his left foot. Quentin had surgery 10 days later to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Both were on the disabled list until last week. And on Tuesday night in San Diego, both figured prominently in the Padres' 6-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Forsythe hit his first major league homer -- the 410-foot blast into the second deck in left at Petco Park doubling as a walk-off homer. And Quentin had two homers in the game -- giving him five homers in his first 23 a...

Daily Friar 6.6.12

I'm going on record to say that last night's game was the best of the season so far. Carlos Quentin was tearing it up and was only overshadowed by Logan Forsythe and his heroic walk off home run. Everything seemed to just go right last night. Maybin with the clutch double, Quentin with the two home runs, then Forsythe with his monstrous walk off. And yes you did read that...

Sleeper Alert: Andrew Cashner Slated to Start on Saturday

Hard-throwing Padres reliever Andrew Cashner is scheduled to start on Saturday against the Brewers. The 6’6″, 200 lb fireballer from Conroe, TX has a 10.0 SO/9 rate over 26 innings this season, and could be a nice streaming start for fantasy owners looking for a sleeper pitcher with high strikeout upside. Padres activate Street from DL

The San Diego Padres activated right-handed relief pitcher Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. Street was placed on the disabled list on May 5 with a strained right lat muscle. In two rehabilitation appearances for Single-A Lake Elsinore, he had a 9.00 ERA, allowing one hit (a home run) and one walk while striking out one. With the Padres...

San Diego Padre Logan Forsythe makes perfect throw to gun down San Francisco Giant Angel Pagan at third base

When Joaquin Arias hit...

Velocity Decline and Pitcher Attrition by Age

On May 28, the Twins released 33-year-old starter Jason Marquis. Considering how bad Twins pitchers have been this season, Marquis’ numbers stood out as being even worse. In seven starts, Marquis posted a 8.47 ERA and a 7.25 FIP, numbers driven largely by a 7.5% strikeout rate, a 27.3% HR/FB and a sky-high .352 BABIP against. There was some speculation that, since Marquis has...

Padres 6, Giants 5

Logan Forsythe hit his first major league home run leading off the ninth inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 6-5 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. Forsythe hit a 1-0 pitch from Steve Edlefsen (0-1) into the second deck in left field. Huston Street (1-0), who came off the disabled list earlier in the day, pitched the ninth for the win, escaping a bases...

Daily Friar 6.7.12

The Padres should have won the game yesterday. However, too many miscues and missed opportunities led to yet another loss to add to their already terrible record. The only difference with this loss is they made things fairly competitive. That's what I am really liking about this series so far. They are not just throwing away games, but are staying in them for the most part. We...

Forget about bobbleheads. Let’s get crunk in Tucson.

The Triple-A Tucson Padres, whose attendance this year has been a little slow, have come up with a promotion that’s either genius or reckless, depending on your point of view. If you happen to live in a large house with Greek letters on the front, you probably think the Kino Krawl is super awesome. The deal: you buy a ticket for Friday’s game (cost: $15) and in addition to admission...

MadFriars' Farm Report June 6

Cory Spangenberg hit his 1st HR of the year, and Rymer Liriano had 4 hits... and yet the Storm still managed to lose. Not the best day to be a pitcher in the Padres' system

MadFriars' Farm Report June 5

It takes one amazing rally to have Yasmani Grandal score Jedd Gyorko on a home run, THE SAME INNING that Jedd Gyorko hit a grandslam! Way to go T-Pads

Get Excited for Max Fried

In yesterday's Major League baseball draft with the 7th pick the San Diego Padres selected Max Fried out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Studio City, California. A highly touted 6'4 pitcher, who will undoubtedly spend time in the minors but has major league ability.  We will no doubt keep an eye on his progress but he has serious potential to be the next...

If the Hat Fits, Boo It.

Crush ‘em, beat ‘em. Make them cry! These are the things that used to run through my head and definitely out my mouth when my beloved Padres faced the hated Giants. Even a year ago I would condone the slaughter of both pandas and baby giraffes. “Zombie Nation” was not allowed to play in my household because after a RBI extra base hit, we listened to “Sandstorm”. And...

Giants-Padres Preview

Tim Lincecum's last win came more than a month ago against the San Diego Padres. A visit to Petco Park might help end his roughest stretch of the season. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner looks to avoid losing a fourth consecutive start by trying to continue his dominance over the Padres on Tuesday night. Lincecum (2-6, 5.82 ERA) is 0-4 with a 5.88 ERA in six starts since...
