The righty pitcher Brian Lawrence is from Fort Collins, Texas where he attended Carthage High School. His talents took him to Northwestern State University of Louisiana before getting drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round of 1998 MLB Draft. The late pick impressed in A-Rk up to Single A in his first minor league season with a winning record, a sub 3 ERA, and a strikeout rate closing in on 9. Lawrence easily worked his way to AAA with consistent quality starts, gradually earning a spot in the 2001 starting rotation after being used in a relief role. Lawrence went 5-5 with a 3.45 ERA (career high). The next season Lawrence’s ERA grew to 3.69, and he went 12-12 with a career high two complete game shutouts in his 210 IP. That season against Baltimore he became the 33rd pitcher to strike out the side on just 9 pitches. In 2003 #50 struggled with a 10-15 record and an ERA over 4, where it would stay for the rest of his career. The next year he somewhat bounced back with a 15...

Rotation's rebound fuels Angels' surge

There was no single reason for the slump the Los Angeles Angels' rotation slipped into for nearly two months. There were at least five of them -- one for each of the five starting pitchers. The result was a 46-game stretch from June 28 through Aug. 20 during which the Angels' starters had a collective ERA of 5.71 that was out of sync with the individual track records and...
