It’s almost like his parents knew he was going to be a professional baseball player (otherwise his parents would’ve name him Three-Pointer or Touchdown). Homer Bush played 2nd base and shortstop, the San Diego Padres drafted him in the 7th round of the 1991 MLB Draft.
After some up and down minor league years the Padres traded Homer Bush and Hideki Irabu to the New York Yankees for Ruben Rivera and Rafael Medina. Homer debuted in 1997 and had 4 hits in his 11 AB’s. The next season with the Yankees Bush batted .380 (71 AB’s) and hit his first homerun. More importantly Bush won a World Series against his old team the San Diego Padres in 1998.
In 1999 Bush was packaged with David Wells and Graeme Lloyd for Blue Jays ace Roger Clemens. In Toronto Bush became an everyday stater, but he didn’t really live up to his name, he only hit 5 HR’s, but had 55 rbi’s, 32 stolen bases with a .320 batting average. It would have been more appropriate if his parents named Double (he had 26 in the 1999 season). In 2000 Bush hit a very below average .215, but he came back in 2001 and hit .306. And then the next year he hit .231 and the Blue Jays released him. The Florida Marlins gave him a second chance, and he hit .222. He came back in 2004 to the New York Yankees but his hip injuries led to his retirement in 2005.
Overall analysis: Homer Bush, great name, inconsistent player, pimp. You can’t tell me Homer Bush didn’t have amazing pickup lines with a name like that.
