The Texas Rangers have agreed on a one-year contract extension with Colby Lewis, the injured right-hander who could have been a free agent after this season. The AL West-leading Rangers announced the deal for the 2013 season Monday but did not release financial terms. Lewis was 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 16 starts this season before surgery in July to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow. Originally drafted by the Rangers in 1999 with a compensation pick between the first and second rounds, Lewis is 32-29 with a 3.93 ERA in 80 starts since rejoining the team in 2010 after two seasons in Japan. He is 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in eight postseason starts.

Lewis, who would have been a free agent after the season, will make 2 million and could make up to 6 million if he reaches all of the incentives in his contract. Lewis had surgery to repair the flexor tendon July 27 and isn'...

Extensions and Injuries: Colby Lewis Gets a One-Year Extension From Rangers

Offering a contract extension to an injured player is a risky proposition.  It gets more risky when we're talking about baseball contracts.  In football, a team can essentially tear up a contract, void it, and start over if they don't like what they see from someone or if that player can't perform.  However, contracts in baseball are guaranteed.  Aside from incentive...

Rangers RHP Lewis gets one-year extension

The Texas Rangers agreed to extend the contract of right-handed pitcher Colby Lewis through the 2013 season, ESPN Dallas reported Monday. Lewis will make a base salary of $2 million but could earn up to $4 million through incentives. Lewis is out for the rest of the season with a torn flexor tendon in his pitching elbow. He said Saturday that he expects to start rebuilding arm...

Rangers insert Perez in starting rotation

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers have made a switch in their pitching rotation and will go with rookie left-hander Martin Perez Friday in Seattle. Perez will take the rotation spot of Scott Feldman (6-11). Feldman allowed six runs in 2 22 innings Saturday and was replaced by Perez, who pitched 4 13 scoreless innings. "He's been very aggressive," Texas manager Ron...

Perez replaces Feldman in Rangers' rotation

The Texas Rangers are making a change to their rotation for the final 16 games of the season. He replaces the same man he relieved Saturday: right-hander Scott Feldman. "He's been very aggressive," manager Ron Washington said of...

Angels score two runs on Rangers wild pitch

There was so much that went on in this play during Tuesday night's Rangers-Angels game. Texas pitcher Tanner Scheppers throws a wild pitch on just his second pitch of the evening, allowing Chris Iannetta to come home to score. Catcher Mike Napoli's threw came nowhere near Scheppers, covering the plate, and instead veered towards the left side of the plate, where it hit umpire...

Harrison gets it done

Anyone who thinks Matt Harrison is the #3 guy in the playoff rotation probably needs to look again.  How is he NOT #2?  Only Yu Darvish looks sharper right now.  Those two are the guys I want out there the most if the Rangers make the post-season for the third time.  But enough about the post-season.  There’s still some work to do. Harrison did his part today.  And so did...

Texas within reach of AL West title in tight race

(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.) By STEPHEN HAWKINS AP Sports Writer Another division title is within reach for the two-time defending American League champion Texas Rangers. The Rangers (87-59) have the AL's best record. But they are still in a tight division race, with the A's the closest chaser instead of the expected Los Angeles Angels. Texas had its last regular season...

Rangers can’t rally after Angels plate eight in 4th

I’m just going to come right out and say it — tonight’s game sucked.  OK, so the whole thing wasn’t terrible, but all I can really remember is that 4th inning.  That’s really the only inning that mattered in tonight’s game. Down 1-0 heading into the 3rd, the Rangers fired back with a Mike Napoli home run, a Mitch Moreland single and an Ian Kinsler two-run shot.  They...
