The Texas Rangers will give 19-year-old infielder Jurickson Profar, considered their top prospect, a chance to prove he belongs on the playoff roster.

The club announced after Friday's 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians that it intended to purchase the contract of Profar from Class AA Frisco. He hit .281 (135-for-480) with 14 home runs, 26 doubles, seven triples, 62 RBI, 76 runs and 16 stolen bases in 126 games with Frisco. He has played shortstop primarily, but he has also worked at second.

His 47 extra-base hits are the most by any Class AA infielder, and he has hit .294 (134-for-456) since opening the season 2-for-26. His 50-game on-base streak from April 7-June 2 is the longest by any minor league player in 2012. Profar ranked among Texas League leaders in triples (tied for fourth), total bases (sixth), walks (sixth), runs (seventh), hits (seventh), slugging percentage (10th), doubles (tied for 11th) and RBI (11th).

The Rangers are considering options for a reserve middle infielder for the postseason. Profar has a much higher set of skills than any player Texas could acquire in a trade, but it's unclear how well-developed those skills will be if he sits on the bench for much the next month and then is called on to take a key at-bat in the postseason.

The club has found itself with a weak bench in each of the last two postseasons because it was stuck with veterans with a limited amount of skills. Alberto Gonzalez was a reserve infielder for much of the season, but he has since been replaced. He was not on the list of the Rangers' expected September call-ups.

Infielder Brandon Snyder, right-hander Yoshinori Tateyama, left-hander Martin Perez and outfielder Leonys Martin are also expected to be called up.

"It gives us bodies, flexibility," manager Ron Washington said of the club's intended moves. "You have more people with ability. That makes it less stressful."
