Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus exited last night’s game with tightness in his lower back, and the ailment was enough to keep him out of today’s lineup. Manager Ron Washington told reporters – including Master Tesfatsion of MLB.com – that he decided to give Andrus today’s game off in hopes that the shortstop can return for Monday’s opener against the Oakland Athletics. During the first inning of yesterday’s game, Andrus reached base on a single. Ian Kinsler followed with a hit of his own, but Andrus pulled up as he reached third base. He was ultimately replaced by pinch-runner Adam Rosales, as he told reporters after the game that his discomfort intensified as he approached third base. "Before I hit second base, I felt it and everything just got worse when I was going to third base," Andrus said. "It happened to me before, so it's nothing new." Tesfatsion notes that Andrus has played through back spasms throughout the season, but usually the discomfort hits in his upper back. While he hopes to return as soon as possible, he said he is willing to sit for a few days so as to avoid missing an extended stretch. "I want to get on the field sooner rather than later, but I want to be, not sure about 100 percent, but at least 80 percent," Andrus said. "I don't want to go out there and have it not feel well, and then try to hustle and do something worse. If I need extra days, I'll take it. As soon as I feel good, I'll be in the field." Andrus is having a down year overall for the Rangers. The 25-year-old has only hit .263/.324/.315 with 16 doubles and four triples to go with 35 stolen bases in 41 attempts.
