FRISCO, Texas -- The Texas Rangers finalized their Opening Day roster Wednesday by officially purchasing the contract of left-hander Robbie Ross and utility infielder Alberto Gonzalez.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the club has designated right-hander Cody Eppley for assignment.
Texas also put right-hander Yoshinori Tateyama on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back muscle strain. The move is retroactive to March 30.
Left-hander Neal Cotts, who was battling with Ross for the lefty bullpen spot, has been assigned to Round Rock where he will open the season on the disabled list.
Texas also added some more pitching depth, signing veteran right-hander Aaron Heilman to a minor-league deal. Heilman, 33, was in camp with the Seattle Mariners this spring. He's 35-46 in nine years in the majors.
"I'm very pleased with what we're going to start the season with," Texas manager Ron Washington said.
Cruz, Adams OK
Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz, who left Tuesday's game after getting hit by a pitch on his left elbow, won't play in Wednesday's game against Frisco. Washington said he expects Cruz, who had x-rays that were negative, to be ready for Friday's opener.
Right-hander Mike Adams should be fine for Friday too. Adams was hit in the leg by a liner Tuesday. He was not scheduled to pitch against Frisco.

Buried deep in a report from the Dallas Observer on the new food offerings at Texas Rangers games this year was a tidbit about the $26 ‘Champion’ Dog that has taken the ballpark hot dog to the next level. You might remember this beast as the 2-foot meat missile that also includes runny cheese, onions jalapenos and some chili sauce. The big question from us was whether there...

Ian Kinsler was on the way to Rangers Ballpark with teammate Michael Young when they saw the warnings on highway signs to take shelter immediately.
With heavy storms moving through the region and producing multiple tornadoes Tuesday afternoon, the Texas Rangers stars heeded the warning.
''We were on the way here and we turned back around and went back home,'' Kinsler...
For nearly 40 years, opening day for the Texas Rangers only offered hope if you ignored reality and history. Even when the organization won the AL West three times in the 1990s, it was never a serious threat to make it past the New York Yankees.
But coming off back-to-back trips to the World Series, the Rangers have become one of baseball's superpowers. It would be considered...
Michael Young had a pair of RBI doubles, though one of them should have been his first home run this spring, and the Texas Rangers beat the Mexico City Red Devils 13-4 on Tuesday night.
Ian Kinsler homered and Nelson Cruz had a two-run double before leaving the game with a bruised left elbow for the two-time defending American League champions, who played at Rangers Ballpark for...

FRISCO, Texas (AP) -- Yu Darvish struck out five over four scoreless innings in his first game in Texas, leading the Rangers to a 6-1 victory Wednesday against Double-A Frisco in their final exhibition game of the spring.
Darvish struck out the first two batters he faced, even after going to a 3-0 count on leadoff hitter Jurickson Profar, one of the Rangers' top prospects.
The Texas Rangers honored the memory of a fan who fell to his death last year, unveiling a life-size statue of the man and his son.

Six months after being hired for his first managing job, Ventura's first game...
The Texas Rangers and second baseman Ian Kinsler are discussing a six-year extension, though the two sides have yet to agree on financial terms, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Kinsler will become a free agent after the season if the Rangers do not exercise his $10mm option for 2013, which in all likelihood they will exercise. The new deal would replace his option year and run...
