SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Texas Rangers have released veteran first basemanoutfielder Brad Hawpe from his minor-league contract following the team's 6-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. Hawpe hit .231 with four homers and 19 RBIs for the San Diego Padres last season. He went on the disabled list on June 21 and underwent Tommy John ligament transplant surgery on his left elbow five days later. San Diego declined his mutual option on Oct. 30, making Hawpe a free agent. He signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on January 20. Hawpe, who was hampered by tightness in both hamstrings through the early portion of camp, went 6 for 26 with a home run this spring.

2012 season preview: Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers had a 2011 season nearly identical to their 2010: winning the AL West, and then winning the AL pennant. Clear as mud. Unfortunately, the seasons ended the same way too: with a World Series loss to an NL club that got into the playoffs on the season’s last day. Texas returns the nearly identical lineup this season as they had in 2011, with the exception of Josh...

Rangers’ Robbie Ross Vying for Bullpen Role

As spring training winds down, the Texas Rangers bullpen is still in flux. In particular, Robbie Ross is chasing a left-handed reliever role that current Toronto Blue Jay — and one of the game’s better relievers — Darren Oliver once had. At present, Ross is competing with Michael Kirkman for the job, which is of interest because Texas might employ only one lefty in its bullpen...

Last season in 62 games for the Padres, Hawpe hit .231 in 195 at-bats while hitting only four homeruns and driving in 19 runs. His .231 avg, .301 OBP and .344 SLG were all...

Two-time defending American League champion Texas in January committed more than $107 million, including...

Rest of the AL West: Texas Rangers

The start of the most anticipated LA Angels regular season literally ever is right around the corner.  I'm excited.  You're excited.  We are all excited.  You know who isn't excited?  The rest of the AL West.  The other teams in the division all have their own hopes and expectations going into this season, but I like to think that they are all at least slightly...
