Rangers-nelson-cruz-misses
ARLINGTON, Texas Mike Olt seemed surprised to turn his locker chair around Saturday night and see about 10 media members waiting to get his thoughts on his first-career walk-off hit. The Texas Rangers rookie infielder capitalized on a pinch-hit opportunity in the ninth inning, singling home Nelson Cruz to earn a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Olt appeared calm afterward, not certain if he even tagged first base and not concerned if he would receive the ball as a souvenir. "If it ends up in my locker I'm not going to say anything, but hopefully there will be more balls like that," Olt said. "To get in there and perform, it's a good feeling," he added. "I've had some bumps along the road and this is going to help me settle in and just be relaxed and play baseball." Rangers manager Ron Washington prefers using the 23-year-old right-handed hitter against lefties, so Tigers left-hander Phil Coke presented the perfect opportunity for a...

Cruz leaves game with lower back stiffness

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Texas Rangers right fielder Nelson Cruz left Friday night's game against Detroit because of lower back stiffness. Cruz appeared to get hurt in the seventh inning when he dived in an attempt to catch a ball hit by Austin Jackson. The ball bounced in front of Cruz, then over his glove and rolled to the wall as Jackson rounded the bases for the first inside...

Napoli's injury catches Rangers short behind plate

The Texas Rangers have a catching quandary. On Saturday, Mike Napoli headed to the disabled list with a strained quadriceps that has bothered him off and on for weeks. With very little experienced catching in the minors, the club has turned to Luis Martinez as the backup. Martinez was up for a week in July, but was not given an at-bat. He hit .211 with a .614 OPS in 59 at-bats...

Mike Napoli fan gets image of the Rangers catcher shaved into back of his head

We’ve seen fans get images of their favorite athletes shaved into their hair before (see here and here), so it’s not like it’s such a big deal that this guy got Rangers catcher Mike Napoli’s likeness shaved into his head.  Still, you have to admire a person’s level of fandom that they’d be willing to walk around in public with a Napoli haircut for the month or so that...

Rangers take series from Tigers

ARLINGTON, Texas August is historically when the Rangers have wilted, but so far this year the dog days have brought back their old bark. Several of the Rangers' upward trends were evident in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Tigers. They got great pitching from a formerly erratic starter, Yu Darvish. They jumped on the Tigers early, building a 6-0 lead after four innings. And...

Fan gets Mike Napoli image shaved into head

Fan is short for fanatic. We’ve seen evidence of this numerous times over the years. Getting your favorite player tattooed somewhere on you is popular. Having players from your favorite team painted on your car has been done as well. Now we’re apparently at having a player’s likeness shaved into your head, like [...]

Rangers 8, Tigers 3

Josh Hamilton hit his 32nd homer and drove in three runs, Yu Darvish struck out eight and the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3 Sunday. Hamilton had a two-run drive in the first inning to take the major league lead in home runs. He added an RBI single in the third to give him 99 RBIs, which is also tops in baseball. Yu Darvish (12-8) allowed six hits and walked five in...

Early Texas rally overwhelms Tigers in 8-3 loss

The Texas heat was almost as hot as the Texas bats as the Rangers used a three run third inning to beat up on Rick Porcello and the Tigers Sunday from Arlington. After tagging Porcello for two runs in the first inning the Rangers didn’t ease up in the third by quickly jumping out to a 5-0 lead. After an Ian Kinsler double to get things going in the inning, two errors by Rick Porcello...

Wasted Chances: Tigers fall to Rangers 2-1 in bottom of the 9th

A shaky bullpen, runners left on base and a hapless offense doomed the Tigers in their 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday night. After getting the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth the Tigers once again failed to get the go-ahead run across home plate as both Boesch and Peralta simply couldn’t get the job done. In the following half inning Tigers reliever Brayan...

Rangers-Yankees Preview

While the short-term goal for Ryan Dempster is to continue finding a comfort zone with the Texas Rangers, the bigger picture is helping his team hold off the New York Yankees for the best record in the AL as the division leaders meet in the Bronx on Monday to start a crucial four-game series. Both the Rangers (67-46) and Yankees (67-47) have comfortable cushions atop their respective...
