Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba, who struck an umpire during a game last Friday, has been suspended by the Venezuelan winter league for 66 games for his actions. The Venezuela native was playing for the Leones del Caracas team when the incident occurred. Torrealba hit home-plate umpire Dario Rivera Jr. in his mask after striking out. Rivera received medical attention between innings but remained in the game. Venezuelan League president Jose Grasso Vecchio announced the punishment Monday morning. Friday night Texas general manager Jon Daniels said the Rangers were looking into the incident. Torrealba's punishment, which will also keep him out of the league in 2012, carries no weight in Major League Baseball. Torrealba was hitting .241 with a home run and three RBI in Venezuela. He's entering the second year of a two-year deal with the Rangers. He batted .273 last season with seven home runs and 37 RBI.

Yea, this winter sucks, although the play of the local football teams has been nice, it’s not the same as baseball nearly everyday. Yorvit Torrealba’s meltdown was kind of amusing, though, and sad.  Also, heaven help us if Major League Baseball starts to go into sponsorship overload like the uniforms in Venezuela show.
