The Rays finished third and with a record of 90-72 in the A.L. East last season.  To start the season, the Rays have placed designated hitter Luke Scott (right calf strain) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 24, designated C Stephen Vogt and C Robinson Chirinos for assignment and reassigned C Craig Albernaz to the minor leagues. The Rays have selected the contracts of RH Jamey Wright and 1B Shelley Duncan. In addition, they have selected the contract of RH Juan Carlos Oviedo (Tommy John surgery) and placed him on the 60-day DL. With these moves, the Rays roster is now set at 25    PITCHERS (12 +1) B-T HT. WT. Upton Season Outlook The Rays will go as far as their bats will take them. Tampa Bay was 11th in runs scored, 13th in hits, 12th in batting average and 11th in slugging percentage in the American  League in 2012. For that to improve, it’s important for the Rays to keep the core of the team hitting consistently throughout the season. Primarily Evan Longoria, Desmond Jennings, and Ben Zobrist. Look for the Rays to improve their offense this season and give themselves a chance at finishing second or perhaps first in the A.L. East.
