In Thursday's Orioles-Rays game, the Rays got a bad break in the ninth inning that ended up costing them the game. Trailing 6-2 with men on first and second and no one out, Evan Longoria hit a ball to deep left center field that just missed clearing the fence, bouncing off the top of the wall and rolling towards the infield. Longoria ended up at second and Ben Zobrist ended up at third on the play while Sean Rodriguez scored, which would have brought the tying run to the plate with none out. But as you can tell from the video, it didn't exactly work out that way. Longoria was called out on the play, because the umpires ruled that he ended up passing Zobrist on the basepaths. All replays shown on TV were inconclusive, but it was close, and you can't fault the umpires for making the call they did. Longoria getting called out ended up snuffing out Tampa Bay's rally, as instead of second and third with none out, they only had a man on third with one out. Shelley Duncan and James Loney sandwiched pop-ups around a Yunel Escobar walk, and that ended up finishing off the Rays and handing the Orioles a hard-fought victory. You can't fault Zobrist here, because if the ball had been caught in center by Adam Jones and Zobrist was halfway around second, he probably would have been doubled off of first. At the same time, you need to admire Longoria's hustle, even if it didn't end well for the Rays. If there were men on second and third instead of first and second on the play, Zobrist probably would have scored and Longoria may have ended up on third, putting the Rays in an even better position. But that's not what happened, and the baseball gods went against the Rays today. [follow]
